Your a big western rpg guy then nim. Curious lack of Diablo II when you included icewind dale. I prefered the gameplay of the later Fallouts over the older games and definitely over the elder scroll games. Seriously how many sword hacks does it take to kill a guy?

I played Persona 3 and it was very interesting. The gameplay was a dungeon fest but the game had a kind of friendship love meter or whatever it's called to change things up a bit. Also reminded me a little of Pokemon where your persona summon...thing... gets stronger the more you use it. I like this game, I should try the forth game one day. Oh yeah that final boss took me 40 minutes to beat man!

One thing I've noticed about Persona is the boss fights are ridiculous long,  So far I like how you bond with people its a nice mix up from the typical Rpg feel. although I think I spend too much time bonding and not enough time dungeon diving.

I've always preferred western RPG's as well.  JRPG's are fine but I think Fallout/TES style RPG's are some of the best.

Idk, they just don't seem traditional enough for me to thoroughly enjoy.

Yeah, I know what you mean.  But I've always felt that they felt more close to a sort of realistic experience.  If that makes any sense.  I kinda feel like it feels more like the story is more about you, the player , and if feels more like you're in the middle of it all.

Both genres are great but I started on Final Fantasy 7 so I'm biased towards that style of gameplay. Not too sure what my first western rpg was but I do remember my uncle playing a lot of the older ones and starting up clans and all that stuff.

The same can be said about a lot of JRPGs too.

I completely for Megaman and Persona. My bad, them too. FF7 is also going up there.

I agree with you, but I don't think my thoughts are transferring very well to text today lol.  Don't get me wrong, I like JRPG's and certainly they are just as immersive but I've found them to usually be more grindy.  Personally I just prefer the usual gameplay style of western RPG's.

    NES: The Final Fantasy games
SNES: Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore (seriously awesome, it's like Mana), Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, all the Final Fantasy games
PS1: Legend of Mana, Xenogears, Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy Tactics, the Parasite Eve series, Valkyrie Profile, Wild Arms
    Dreamcast: Skies of Arcadia
    PS2: Xenosaga, Valkyrie Profile 2
PSP: Persona 3 Portable, the Ys series

I've spent way too much time on RPGs. My absolute favourites are FF7 and Legend of Mana.

Has anyone played Trails in the Skies for the PSP handheld? It's a really great game that follows the spirit of the older rpg titles like the Lunar series and Grandia. It has that sense of adventure and a very likable cast of characters that made them great. Good luck finding a copy though...

I'm just pissed that I can't get Diablo 2 to work on my current PC.

It was a good game though. (If you look past the aged graphics.)

If i might suggest an indie RPG.....
    http://www.kongregate.com/games/xdanond/rpg-shooter-starwish

It's an anime-esque space rpg with 2d spaceship battles and a heart touching story.

I need a old PS1 RPG to replay. Or maybe one that managed to sneak by and I haven't play yet. Tough trying to find one though.

@Sporadic - have you ever played Koudelka? It's pretty short as RPGs go (doable within 10 hours even on a first run), but it's pretty fun, especially if you like gothic/horror elements in your games. It's a precursor to the Shadow Hearts series for PS2, which you're more likely to have heard of. It's made interesting by the huge degree of flexibility with which you can raise your characters, which is rare, especially in JRPGs, and by the survival horror-esque manner in which you have to make do with what loot you get from battles or find during exploration- every time you play has the potential to be different.

That said, I was barely starting out as a gamer during the PS1 era, so I missed pretty much every other RPG from that gen outside of the FF games, I'm open to suggestions myself :)

@Nim - I'm surprised to see a mention of starwish, but I've payed it too! Good fun. If you've played that, it shouldn't need mentioning, but have you ever played the Epic Battle Fantasy games? They're some of Kong's highest rated games.

@Masterofflys I'll have to check that out. And if you're looking for something to pick up try Vagrant Story, Chrono Cross or Wild Arms.

Yeah, I've heard of those games. Hopefully I can grab them on PSN eventually.
