Nintendo of America streamed a teaser trailer for its upcoming release of Level-5's Yōkai Watch 2: Psychic Specters (Yōkai Watch 2: Shinuchi) Nintendo 3DS game on Monday. The video reveals that the game will ship on September 29 in North America and Europe. The trailer also teases the game's new features including new characters, bosses, maps, and a way to transfer data from the other two Yōkai Watch 2 games.

Level-5 announced the Yōkai Watch franchise in 2011 with a game, manga, and anime already planned. The first game for the Nintendo 3DS shipped in Japan in July 2013. The first two editions of the Yōkai Watch 2 games shipped in Japan in July 2014 under the titles Ganso (Founder) and Honke (Head), and the "definitive edition" Shinuchi (Headliner) shipped in December 2014. The first two Yōkai Watch 3 games, whose stories are set in the United States, shipped in Japan last July, with a third version in December.

The first game launched in the United States in 2015. Nintendo released the first two editions of the second game under the titles Yōkai Watch 2: Bony Spirits and Yōkai Watch 2: Fleshy Souls on September 30 in North America and April 7 in Europe.
