In case those of you who missed it in the Secret Santa thread, here is a terrible rendering done by me using GIMP.

I may make more, depending on the popularity of this thread. But, if this is so dire that no one wants to see another one, then this can be the only the one.

I know, it just takes hours to perfect it really.

It's not a bad start but with a bit of practice, you'll soon be a pro! Keep going! :D

@VeritasOdiumParit my man, we are kindred spirits for this topic it would seem. This was along the lines of my first attempt, although my image I used was a lower quality without some defined borders so I'd end up removing larger sections of it than that.

I tried another one, to even get me to a stage I thought it was acceptable.... Took me way too long. I feel your pain.

    @VeritasOdiumParit
Keep up the work, practice make perfect!
But, please, for now, just kill that one with fire.
    With extreme prejudice.
Don't think I'm being mean! It's just something I do, burning overly bad drawings.

(though I will say, zooming in and using selection tools really help in rendering something, like this:)

(Also, using a Wacom helps as well, though not cheap)

Well, I mean. You're doing better than I am at making maps for a game called Spintires, and it's a simple, simple, simple terrain editor. Keep on keepin' on.

Here is another attempt. This time I used pre-rendered images. What I cannot figure out on Gimp is how the layers work. It works differently to photoshop as it does not remember them after you copy so many things into it. I was trying to scale down the fire so it would be smaller. But, if I did that it would disappear never to be found in the image. So the only way to keep it in was to copy it over and just move it. For some reason GIMP does not like it when I try to scale it down.

I only use gimp, so I can give it a try if you want.

If all you wanna do is shrink the fire, put it as the uppermost layer (the higher a layer, the more it is in the foreground).

Then use the scaling tool while holding shift (or control, I can't remember which one) holding shift make is scale up/down while keeping its width to height ratio.

I personally have only one thing per layer (one character, one tree, etc.), and tend to have about ten layers.

I see. But, whenever I copy it in, and then scale it down it vanishes. Do I have to click on New Layer every time I copy and paste something? (Also, do I make a new layer before or after I copy and paste)? Layering on GIMP is more confusing than Adobe Photoshop.

I've never used Photoshop, so I can't compare, but yes, everytime I paste something, I right click on it and then "to new layer"

I've been using Gimp for too long to remember why exactly, but I guess a copy alone by itself was lacking a few functionalities.
