It’s been a long wait for Sony and Marvel, under the terms of their new Spider-sharing arrangement, to whittle down the list of potential candidates to take over playing Peter Parker and alter ego Spider-Man. But the red web flag is flying over Marvel HQ (or, er, the company just put out a press release), bringing news that The Impossible’s Holland has won the role, signalling that Spider-Man will remain British (sort of) for now.

In related news, director Jon Watts, who has been drawing praise for his work on thriller Cop Carand horror movie Clown, has scored the job of bringing Spider-Man back to the big screen in his next solo adventure. “As with James Gunn, Joss Whedon, and the Russo brothers, we love finding new and exciting voices to bring these characters to life,” says Kevin Feige. “We spent a lot of time with Jon and find his take and work inspiring.”

For Holland, Empire's Best Male Newcomer 2013, who had long been one of the favourites for the role, it means he’ll be shooting scenes with members of the Avengers for Captain America: Civil War, in which Spider-Man plays an important, if relatively small, role. “Sony, Marvel, Kevin and I all knew that for Peter Parker, we had to find a vibrant, talented young actor capable of embodying one of the most well-known characters in the world,” said producer Amy Pascal. “With Tom, we’ve found the perfect actor to bring Spider-Man’s story into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”

Captain America: Civil War is scheduled to arrive here on April 29 next year, with the first newSpider-Man film set for July 28, 2018.

Cos it's all Sony has from the ever so popular Marvel so they will keep at it like a moth to a light bulb.

Well, this is actually the first Spider-man movie where Marvel has creative control. The rest have been Sony. So this reboot is needed to have creative control over the character again. Spider-man is important in Civil War and considering that's the next Captain America movie they need to establish Spider-man's relevance in the Marvel cinematic universe. Plus it's a great, well-know super hero to add to the line up of the Avengers in the future. A face that non comic book readers are familiar with.

And his young age doesn't bother me. Peter was 15 when he got bit by the spider after all. And a lot of the good stories happen when he's in highschool.
