Class warfare, social injustice and the politics of survival play out as the various sections of the train represent the different strata of society – the privileged rich live in relative luxury up front, while the "tailies" suffer at the back, starving and mistreated. There's a mutiny brewing...

Snowpiercer, which, like the movie, adapts Jacques Lob, Benjamin Legrand and Jean-Marc Rochette's graphic novel, is set more than seven years after the world has become a frozen wasteland. Attempts to reverse global warming have gone badly wrong and what remains of humanity circles the globe inside a gigantic, perpetually moving train.

There was nearly a mutiny behind the scenes too, as original showrunner Josh Friedman departed over creative differences, followed by first director Scott Derrickson. Since then, Orphan Black's Graeme Manson has been in charge, overseeing the first season, which has Jennifer Connelly, Daveed Diggs. Alison Wright, Mickey Sumner, Susan Park, Iddo Goldberg, Katie McGuinness, Lena Hall, Annalise Basso and Sam Otto in its cast. A second season has been ordered, but the first won't reach screens (via TBS in the States, Netflix here) until spring next year.
