Yes, read it once and seen the movies. My opinion is that the books are better by a large margin but not worth rewatching/rereading anytime soon. I especially didn't like the second book/movie as I found Bella's depression agonizing to say the least.

Anyway, to the question. Hmmm... it's entirely possible, the most likely cause probably global death by mega-asteroid. Though we'd probably already be alerted if something like that were coming up.
We've already got a bit of an apocalypse brewing down here. You may have actually heard of it, goes by the name "Tony Abbott".
