@noobs and @supernatural-knight from my quick online search there doesn't seem to be any mention of different endings between the the Japanese and English versions.

These are the only changes that have been mentioned:

    Changes include:

The insertion of a significant portion of background chatter

The addition of dialogue explaining or emphasizing certain on screen elements. An example of this would be when Chihiro reaches the bathhouse, and having her state what it was. These insertions are mostly used to explain certain aspects of Japanese culture that are foreign in America, and other English speaking countries.

New lyrics were made impromptu by John Ratzenberger for the English version of a song sung by Aogaeru

Some also consider the characters in the English version to be 1 or 2 years older than their Japanese counterparts, based on their voices.

Critics of the English dub believe that the characters are cheapened in it and the plot is made more childish, and they resent that lines were edited to make the film more suitable for young children and more fathomable for a Western audience. Although Miyazaki himself claims that Chihiro doesn't remember what happened, there is a line added at the end of the English dub which makes it appear that Chihiro does in fact remember what happened in the spirit world.

Maybe that final part about what Miyazaki states is the different ending Noobs was talking about, I can see how that would be large enough to mention but overall it isn't that different it seems. I wonder how characters are cheapened, interesting result there BK, as always when it comes to Ghibli you do not disappoint.

Mononoke was watched and thoroughly enjoyed! I even went and drew some fan art afterwards. But I agree with Supernatural knight on the topic of Spirited Away, i find wether one prefers a dub or sub comes down to which they saw first, unless the one they saw second was incredibly better. Considering the phenomenal quality of any dubs of Ghibli films, I think I'll stay with the dub.

I prefer to stick with dubs of Ghibli's movies as Miyazaki suggests so I can appreciate the beauty of the artwork.

Also, if you guys watch Arrietty I suggest you go with the UK dub rather than the US one as it has a better cast and stays true to the Japanese version.

Thats good Ben, Princess Mononoke is a great movie I'm glad you enjoyed it, although I do wish you'd use princess in front of it since there is a series just called Mononoke   http://myanimelist.net/anime/2246/Mononoke

I've watched every Ghibli show available [at the time] in dub format, so as such I've not seen Arrietty's or from up on poppy hill's dub yet but I saw the sub not long after they were released online so thats good enough for me. Still waiting for this Ghibli plane movie, damn it I want to see it and the controversy surrounding it

I'll keep that in mind :p

But ahh, i love a good controversy.

When it comes to anything to do with WWII Japan always becomes very fractured, opinion wise. According to a university student living in Japan that I routinely have discussions with in regards to Japan's socio-economic history. There's a group of people who harbour resentment about the war, particularly in the older generations, that Japan surrendered instead of fighting to the end. Pre-1945 Japan had changed very little in its societal values over the previous couple of centuries, the code of the samurai was deeply engrained in its military forces ( as evident by the infamous kamikaze pilots) thus surrendering to an enemy, particularly one that they had provoked in the first place was was considered by some to be a huge dishonour.

On the contrary there's an equally vocal group in Japan who want to atone for their crimes during the war as they feel that much of the world see's Japan still as an enemy who tried to take over the pacific. As such they've become paranoid about anything that shows what Japan did during the war as justified or admirable because in their eyes all events in war should be considered evil and cast into the depths of history.

However its an incredibly complex issue that I don't think I'll ever be able to quite wrap my head around, but really anything to do with the war in Japan is a dicey subject at best. But props to Miyazaki for sticking to his guns and making the film he wanted to. From what I've read most of the controversy has to do with how certain historical things are represented in the film, not the actual film as an artwork, hopefully western critics will be a little more objective.

Am I wrong in thinking that WWII Japan reminds me a bit of our crazy terrorists? They just seemed most convinced to do anything that leadership says and the common folks just went along with it.

They come a long way that's for sure.

    @doomguy

You can thank propaganda for that, but propaganda was just as toxic on both sides. The allies were virtually just as willing to do what the leadership said. Whose the terrorist and who's the victim are decided by the winner. The Japanese were a bit more fanatical but that's because they were in a far more desperate situation. Additionally Japanese society was very hierarchical at the time, they were used to having someone in charge telling them what to do and its was done simply because that's the way the country was run. Fortunately this hierarchical society is what gave the emperor of Japan absolute power to end the war when it did. Saving at least 1 million American lives and countless more Japanese. As for the radical change in Japanese society and politics after WWII, that was due quite a bit to the United states running the country until 1952 and basically changed the entire country overnight, hence why politics in Japan is still to this day notoriously indecisive.

So long as I exist no thread shall remain buried. They only exist in my secret lab where I do evil experiments on them until someone actually needs them. Don't be alarmed if an old thread seems a little...different
