Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon: Crystal Discussion Thread

You cannot deny the QUALITY that's happened in the first few episodes.
Rei's introduction episode was just downright awful.

 

What was wrong with it? It was rather skimmed over but overall not that bad.

 

I just started watching the original Sailor Moon. But, I'm going to progress slowly as I don't have much spare time these days. I will get back to this thread in maybe like a year or so? xD All I will say is I am enjoying it It's so funny! xD (the original that is)...

 

are you watching dubs or subs? If you are watching the dub them good lord do NOT watch the last episode of the first season and watch the last two episodes subbed instead. I'll try to avoid spoilers but basically shit gets real in the last two episodes of season one

and whoever was in charge of dubbing decided they would have none of that. They butchered the last two episodes so badly and cut so much out they were able to turn the last two episodes into one episode... THEY CUT THAT MUCH OUT!!!

So yeah even if you are the type who hates subs do NOT watch the last episode dubbed. It's so bad.

 

What was wrong with it?

It was awful, art wise, and acting wise.

Art is awful, ruined Rei's intro episode.
Acting is awful, they should've replaced Kotono Mitsushi

 

I have noticed the dubbed of the original has terrible voice acting. But, that is to be expected. Can't believe how minimal the art is!! I'm enjoying the dubbed for just how terrible it is. It makes everything funnier xD

 

Well like I said with the last couple episodes make sure you at least check out the subs because they really changed way too much with that.

 

Though I have to admit, the opening for the new one does sound a lot better... I do like Momorio Clover Z... (didn't like Bodacious Space Pirates though, that was rather tedious)..

 

Ok, dat does it. SMC is not as good as the original! Don't get me wrong, it's PLENTY GOOD on it's own but, since I grew up with the original, I got to see it from start to, finish - the Sailor Stars season (Hurry up new dub...) And ep 12 of Crystal was PAINFUL to watch due to this. Why? Well *spoilers*

For one, at the end of the original dub, SM fights a supped up giantess ver. of Queen Berl, yet HERE SM takes out her in her original non supped up giantess form and how? Simply by taking a sword, charging it with love (Poorly done I should add) and simply breaking off a necklace that she was getting her powers from the real enemy.

Then there's Darian/Tuxido Mask/Kamen/Momo-chan, in the original, sure he was under her control but, SM snapped him out of it through the power of love, memories and her power which while cheesy, was really good and touching yet HERE, what happens? She can't do it, the real enemy has possed him (kinda) and at the end of the ep, no, before that, it was revieled that SM took her own life in Crystal after Berl killed Darian in the past, thus they were reborn. I was shocked by this but it was alright with me, even though in the original all she did was jump into the air with him while the nega energy carried them into the air and killed them due to the intense power (Or made them faient). Anyway, here at the end of ep 12, SM not being able to return him to normal takes the same sword she defeated Berl with and what does she do? She slices Darian and then immediately thrusts herself through with the sword and then, it says to be continued. -_- This was SOOO forced, the drama was so forced too and it just KILLED the ending for me. I got to see the preview for the 13th ep and, looks interesting and it might redeem itself but for simple nostalgia, Crystal isn't as good as the original and the ending in the original even though poorly cut, is still better.

Lastly, the 4 dark kings (Zaizait, Kunzait etc.) They were being controlled this whole time (I'm, not sure how I feel about this) and when the SS snapped them out of it finally, the real enemy kills them on the spot with 1 blow, right in front of the SS who all had crushes on them... They changed the ending this much, they might as well have let them live, but NOOOO! They had to freaking kill them off in such a crappy (albeit unexpected) way! Also, when q. berl was dying, it tried to make us feel sympathy and sorry for her as she apparently loved Darian this WHOLE TIME unlike in the original where she was an evil heartless snake. This felt so forced and, it played on my emos. (Yeah I felt sorry for her but made at the people who made me feel this way)

And there you have it, tons of reasons why I disliked ep 12 whch should've been so much more epic than this. I also don't like they took away the rose tossing from T. mask, at LEAST let him do it half the time. Not to mention they took away the char dev, took away the "fights" Rei & Serena got into and made the whole season one big love only story practically. -_- : P

After ep 13, we should be getting the Dark moon Kingdom Ark which features Rini/Chibi Usa

I kind of like the change with Beryl. The fact Queen Metalia was mentioned but never seemed to visibly do anything herself and it was all Beryl's doing always struck me as odd. Besides the original anime didn't show Beryl's connection to Endimyon as well as in SMC to me.

I did feel the whole sword thing was a bad choice but it works out and the "his watch protected me while his cristals protected him" thing was rather touching.

Okay just to be clear while I haven't read the manga myself this is apparently following it better so it's not changing things it's actually following it better. I do agree that killing them odd like that was kinda lame but I guess if we did have sailor scouts plus the knights all on the same side it would be a little OP plus then we wouldn't have the "his knights protected him" scene which again was touching. Also even the original anime suggested she loved him. The dub removed it and turned her into a bland generic villain but the japanese version shows her having A LOT of interested in him besides his ability. They didn't have any flashbacks showing she had loved him since before the evil forces even came so we were left to assume she simply fell for him during the attack on the moon. But still the whole "beryl loved Endymion" thing is not new to Crystal.

lastly them making you feel sorry for Beryl proves Crystal did a better job. you may not be happy about it but making the viewer feel remorse or any emotion over a characters death is kind of the whole point. So while it's not your thing (not really mine either to be honest) you can't say crystal is inferior for this.

The loss of the roses is kinda dissapointing but I think that's mainly nostalgia talking. It never made sense and he always felt weak since that was all he EVER did. In this version he actually kicks a little ass. Also I kind of like how they removed a lot of the pointless fighting. To me their "romantic development" felt like the generic "we are going to fight and not get along but of course we are going to quickly grow to like eachother but refuse to admit it until the last possible second". Instead we get to see them meet and slowly fall for eachother. You were complaining about forced in the spoilers but to me the "fighting to loving" thing is forced while gradually falling in love feels more natural.

As for the character development.... remember the original was 46 or so episodes while this is getting just as much plot done in 13 or so. So a little rushing is natural but on the other hand I always felt the original dragged things out a bit too much with two many random "monster of the week" fights. So I feel both are a bit flawed in pacing but for opposite reasons. So overall they were on a time schedule and honestly they did fairly well with character development in the time given so I give a point to crytal for doing well with the time given unlike the original that had more time than it knew what to do with.

I still think this is better than the original as it fixes a lot that the original did poorly. Usagi isn't useless and not only has some decent fighting ability but the guts to back it up and not act like a brat until the very end and a lot of things like the relation between earth and the moon kingdom and how the Dark Kingdom was involved in it all was much better presented in this version.

I'm not pretending SMC is perfect as it has it's own flaws. But I think it does more right than it does wrong.
