Square Enix released the game's patch 3.3, titled "Revenge of the Horde," on Wednesday. The patch includes new main scenario quests, beast tribe quests, flowerpots, hairstyles, and gear. The update also includes the new "The Weeping City of Mhach," "Hullbreaker Isle (Hard)," "The Aquapolis," "Palace of the Dead," and "Sohr Khai," dungeons, as well as "The Final Steps of Faith" trial, among other updates.

After criticism from fans, the company revealed an updated version of the game titled Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn that adds a new world and story. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn launched on Windows PC and PS3 in August 2013, and then on PS4 in April 2014. Square Enix released the first expansion for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, titled Heavensward, last June.

As of August 2015, the game had over 5 million subscribers.
