Shakugan no Shana: Is the main character alive?

    Within the first episode of Shakugan no Shana the main characters is told that he is a torch
    basically the original him was killed sometime earlier that day or week and he is a temporary replacement to ease his passing from the world
    and that his original body is no longer existent. So with out spoiling anything. Is the main character a person? The real him? or is he just a worthless shadow of the original with no real worth? Or something else?
