Hey folks, this is to inform everyone that it is about that time for a server upgrade.

Basically we're hitting the allowed number of max clients. Which is the limit on the number of simultaneous requests that can be served. Simultaneous requests simply means if 150 people all visited your site at the same time, they would all be served at pretty much the same time, but if 200 people showed up then 150 people will be served but 50 people will have to wait until a slot is open.

Our RAM is 2 GB (standard for your average VPS). And at the time stevey and Red left that's all I needed to run the site. Then between how much RAM MySQL uses and the size of your average Apache request, I think 150 is all our server can hold lol. There's a formula to doing it that's basically max clients = total amount of RAM – ( Max RAM allocation to MySQL + amount of RAM used by OS) / average size of Apache process.

I'm gonna continue monitoring the Server Status > Apache Status in the WHM and monitor the number of requests being simultaneously processed. MIGHT be able to increase it up to 160-170 without seeing any negative effects on the server.

Aside from that everything else is fine. We get an average of 20-30gb of traffic a day. We're not even close to our storage limit and we're using roughly 30% of our CPU power at any given time.

The time to upgrade was inevitable and discussed last year when I got our new server. We're finally at the point where we're in need of a higher powered dedicated server. One has already been picked out on a host in NL. The switch will happen some time in May, there will be a little more warning when the actual day comes around. Users should not see any down time as once the new server is set up and everything is transferred over the switch will be sort of instant after the domain name propagates.

Although there is a lot of work we must do before hand, it's nothing anyone should notice on the client level.
