Pokémon Go to Shut Down Streets for Public Events

    Game developer Niantic is partnering with the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to host community events for Niantic's games (Ingress, Pokémon Go) in public spaces in the United States. The events will involve temporarily closing off car traffic on certain city streets, and opening them for pedestrian and bicycle traffic to promote interaction, dancing, playing, and other events. The events will take players on a predetermined tour route through the area, and will include in-game events along the way, such as PokéStops and Gyms.

    The first of these events will take place in Charlotte, North Carolina on May 7, and will coincide with Open Streets 704, a separate community event that similarly will close car traffic for pedestrian and bicycle traffic. The event is experimental, and will collaborate with the Open Streets 704 event to feature Pokémon Go-related content.

    The Pokémon Go app launched in select countries including the United States on July 6, and has since launched in more than 50 countries.​

    This sounds nice, from the beginning they wanted to get people out and about. Essentially to help the closed off gamers to frequent the outside world more considering how many of us prioritise our time indoors rather than outdoors. Remembering back to the videos of mobs hogging up all the space and blocking off traffic for rare spawns, it was an interesting time.
    To place an event that already closes streets in favour for these players is a nice concept, but to the rest of the people around it is just an inconvenience. An inconvenience I'd like to be a part of I think. Too bad it is America....
    I wonder if they would add rarer spawns to make the event more of a success?

    Is anyone else still playing this game? I figure I might as well since I travel a little for work. Or was there another reason why I am still playing it hmm...?

    Pre-planned event that has the permits to block off traffic: Legal.
    Blocking traffic for an event, without the permits to do so: Illegal.

    I'm hoping they have the former, with them announcing such an event that would actually block traffic from using a specific section of road. Otherwise, it's not only annoying, but completely illegal to do.

    It was a reorganised event so I'd imagine it was the former, no way would they announce an event if it wasn't approved first. But this is long over by now, I'd like to know how successful it was. @Vladnyx any chance of finding any info about the event's results ?
