Paramount Pictures chairman and CEO Jim Gianopulos shared some details on the story of the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog film in a Q&A session on June 9. "He's a juvenile delinquent on the adventures in a pretty straight rural environment with a local policeman," Gianopulos said of the title character.

Producer Neal H. Moritz also participated in the Q&A session, and told a story of how he created a short clip to convey the tone and theme for the prospective film in order to sell it to Gianopulos. Of the clip, Gianopulos said, "It was instantly engaging and it was good enough where you could see where it's going."

The live-action/CGI hybrid film is slated to open on November 15, 2019. James Marsden (Westworld, X-Men) will reportedly star in the film.

Jeff Fowler is making is directorial debut with the film. Tim Miller (Deadpool) and Toby Ascher are executive producing with producer Neal Moritz (Fast & Furious franchise) and co-producers Dmitri Johnson and Dan Jevons.

The film project first emerged in 2014 as a hybrid computer-animated and live-action feature film project by Sonyand Marza Animation Planet. In February 2016, Sega Sammy Holdings president and CEO Hajime Satomirevealed that Sony Pictures Entertainment was planning the film.
