NieR: Automata director Yoko Taro, producer Yosuke Saito, and composer Keiichi Okabe participated in a Saturday panel at PAX East in which they answered questions about the possible continuation of the series.

Responding to a social media question about whether the staff are planning to continue the NieR: Automata series, Saito commented that the NieR series, but "not really" NieR: Automata, has "about 50%" chance of continuing. He later clarified that it would depend on whether Yoko Taro would want to do another game.

Yoko Taro said, "I don't really like creating sequels; especially because I feel that the storyline of NieR: Automata is complete in itself, I don't really want to continue that storyline." He joked that, instead, he could turn the Android characters into bugs and make a bug fighting game next.

Near the end of the panel, also thanked fans for their support and said, "With this, we might be able to open another door in the NieR universe." He mentioned he does not know how long it will take, but he wants everyone to look forward to it.

The game shipped for the PlayStation 4 in Japan in February 2017, followed by North America and Europe in March 2017. Square Enix also released the game on PC via Steam. By September it has sold over 2 million copies worldwide.

Square Enix began recruiting writers for a NieR-related work in September. NieR: Automata inspired two stage productions in Japan in January and February.

NieR: Automata is a follow-up to the 2010 NieR game, and reunited the director, producer, and composer. Freelance developer Yoko Taro (Drakengard series, NieR) helmed the project as director at Platinum Games. Yosuke Saito (Dragon Quest X, NieR) was credited as producer, and Keiichi Okabe (Drakengard series, NieR, Yuki Yuna Is a Hero) composed the music. Takahisa Taura (Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Anarchy Reigns) handled the game design, and Akihiko Yoshida (Bravely Second, Final Fantasy XIV) designed the game's characters. J'Nique Nicole and Emi Evans each sang a version of the game's theme song.
