So a few days ago, I received an automated call from what I presumed was the IRS saying that they were planning on filing a lawsuit against me. Naturally, upon hearing this message, I nearly crapped myself. They told me to give them a call back at the number provided, which I did.

After a 10-15 minute conversation on the phone with the individual, I decided to do a bit of research on the message I had received. It turns out that the IRS will never call you in the case that they plan on suing you and they wouldn't try strong-arming you over the phone demanding information such as your SSN or other vital bits of info.

I'm making this thread to warn all of you guys in the States of this threat. Unless there's a sealed envelope in your postbox with the IRS seal and information on how to go about the process, disregard the message and report the individual demanding immediate payment from you.

That's an old scammer trick. I bet if you report it to authorities they'll even tell you that people around your neighborhood get the same crap. They might call again (the scammer), they might try again with the fake tough guy accent "My name is officer bla bla bla of the IRS something something and..."

Could try trolling the caller by giving them the cell phone number to your local police station ;)

Better just to ignore it and report it in though.

Yeah, that scam's been around for years. Some people have learned to just keep them on the phone for as long as possible to waste their time and money trying to scam you, when you're scamming them by continuing to lead them on. This is especially so for credit card scammers. My boss was called up by a scammer trying to steal his credit card information and he kept him on the phone for about a half hour and probably would have kept him on the phone longer if he didn't have work related things he wanted to take care of. The funny part was the scammer didn't even catch onto it when my boss asked the scammer if they needed his social security number. lol Scammer was a total newbie.

Duly noted. Next time they call I'll be sure to mess with them as much as possible

I got a call like this last year and I sent the phone number straight to local authorities. Never did find out what became of that.

Unfortunately, a lot of the numbers they use to call are untraceable. Sure, the guy who called me called from a California area code, but I've seen articles from police who've done investigations on this and found out that a lot of them use these proxy phone numbers in overseas countries like Afghanistan.

Sadly, I've tried doing this. It doesn't do much but hurt your eardrums

Maybe get a playlist of porn sounds and play it over the phone for them, maybe throw in some kinky sounds too. They'll either be really creepy and keep listening or they'll hang up and try scamming someone else.

I get those calls a lot the IRS does not call they send a letter. Also has anyone else gotten the microsoft windows call scam? its were someone calls you on the phone and says they work at windows and they say there is something wrong with you computer. Then they give you a web address so they can take control of your computer.
