This series has to be my favorite anime series. I don't know what it is about this series that I like so much but it is at my top. You have a classical harem style with this anime. The difference is the male lead of the harem winds up discovering a deep dark secret of the town. The secret is soo dark that anyone that discovers it, has to die. Keiichi Maebara is the male lead who sadly, discovers the towns deep dark secret. The series is broken down into arcs that show various characters perspectives on the dark secret of the town. With each new arc, a new part of the mystery is discovered and the plot thickens. I would hate to be Keiichi Maebara but I enjoyed the series. If you was Keiichi Maebara, what would you do if you discovered that the town you just moved to has a deep dark secret? Would you keep it to yourself and forget about it or would you investigate and try to bring to light the true meaning? You decide!

^ If you've seen the entire show [2nd season and everything] you'd know why that is a bad idea and wouldn't work, unless thats what that emoticon was implying.

About the show, harem-ish kind of setup yeah the reason it is good is because of the death scenes that happen almost out of no where and the psychological aspect.

About the question I can't see either option allowing you to live very long, secrets have ways of being exposed so trying to keep your knowledge about a secret a secret itself is tricky I'd imagine [like in the first arc when Rena confronts Keiichi]. Not to mention I'm sure they'd have "procedures" to fix these scenarios.
The other option of investigating is definitely the more dangerous option but that in itself could be fun, and considering you'd probably die soon either way this option sounds more interesting to spend your final weeks doing.

I would investigate it actually. I would like to know what I'm in for and whether or not my friends were in danger or at risk of being in danger.

In fact, for those who do not know, Hinamizawa was based of an actual village in japan. The buildings and the scenery are pretty much the exact same. it's called Shirakawa-go. I think I read up on an article about it. It said, Shirakwa-go wasn't too happy having a horror anime basing the anime from that village. You can't really blame them though.
