Dyslexia is another common problem that is rarely picked up upon. I have had a friend with this type of learning difficulty and her family had been told that they were nothing but attention seekers who were not doing their job properly. However, this difficulty is very much a problem for young people especially if it is not recognized throughout their life and is carried with them into their adulthood.

    What is it?

Dyslexia is a specific reading disability due to a defect in the brain's processing of graphic symbols.

It is a learning disability that alters the way the brain processes written material and is typically characterized by difficulties in word recognition, spelling, and decoding.

People with dyslexia have problems with reading comprehension.

The National Center for Learning Disabilities says that dyslexia is a neurological and often genetic condition, and not the result of poor teaching, instruction, or upbringing.

Dyslexia is not linked to intelligence.

    Symptoms:

Problems learning the letter sounds for reading and spelling

Difficulty in reading single words, such as on flash cards and in lists (decoding)

    Lack of fluency

    Reading slowly with many mistakes

    Poor spelling

    Strategies to over come Dyslexia
Poor visual gestalt / coding (orthographic coding

    • Improve Comprehension
    • Stop letters from jumping, skipping words and losing your place
    • Stop reversals of letters and words
    • Improve sight word recognition
    • Improve decoding (sounding out) of words
    • Improve fluency and pronunciation
    • Retain skills from day to day. No more losing skills
    • Stop reading fatigue in it’s tracks
    • Read faster with less work\
Although I never have been diagnosed with Dyslexia, I was never the greatest of spellers. So, my mother would make palm cards with words on them and every day and night I would have to learn the meaning of the words and how to spell them if I wanted a treat (This was when I was in pre-school.) This may seem childish but in the long run, it works. However, the overall message is to keep practicing until you completely know the word.

This is kinda ironic like a month ago I found out that I had dyslexia but it mainly affects me with writing and not reading.
