Death in My Neighbour Totoro?

    I came across this while researching Ghibli Trivia. This essay attests that Mei and Satsuki died partway through the movie and are visited by the spirits of death, the Totoro. They came to this conclusion because the girls loose their shadows in the latter part of the film.





    Studio Ghibli asserts that the omission of the shadows was a cost saving maneuver.
    What do you think?

    I think that it's certainly an interesting theory. I had honestly never noticed or even thought about it. If they died then how did they die? Was it just not shown in the film? Or maybe I missed something.

    Either way I guess I don't really have an opinion or a theory of my own. Studio Ghibli, having made the film, is probably the best authority to speak on whether or not this is true so I would probably have to go with their conclusion, if anything.

    I think they ran out of money as is the case with a lot of anime before 2000.
