Honestly, I'm not really all that excited. It's great that we're getting a new Fallout, but I've never really gotten into it. But then, I just seem to dislike RPGs and huge open worlds.

Question: Should I play the Fallout games? I've heard a few of my friends hyping them a bunch and was wondering if worth my time? I really liked Skyrim if that helps?

Have you ever played Oblivion or Morrowind? In terms of gameplay, Fallout 3 and NV are a bit closer to those.

But if you're into Bethesda-style RPGs and you like the idea of a post-apocalyptic, 60's stylized RPG, then you should definitely give it a try.

I would play Fallout 3, first. Then give NV a try.

There is also Fallout 1 and 2. They weren't made by Bethesda and, while they have the same setting and tone, play drastically different. They're top-down, dungeon crawler-esque RPGs. Good games, but you may or may not have a harder time getting into them. You can pick them up on Steam or GOG.

Of course, you could always just wait for Fallout 4. It's up to you. But I definitely recommend playing Fallout 3. It will give you a feel for whether or not you will like the series.

I would say yes, fallout 3 oh god yes as its done by Bethesda, new vagas not as much, still a good game in its own right and holds the spirit of the game but made by another developer.

    Only played Skyrim.

    Coolies, thanks for the advice!~
FO3 is on sale on Steam now for 40% off, but should I wait for the upcoming Steam Sale in case it's cheaper?

Oh, and probably I should share this here in case it hasn't been shared here already~ (Can't remember if I was linked on here or on Facebook)

A whole Youtube series where the guy aims to kill EVERYTHING he encounters~~ XD

I'm not sure. I have never played a Fallout game (aside from 1 & 2) on PC. I have 3 and NV for 360. So I can't attest to how it plays on PC. I've not really heard about the PC ports having any real issues by comparison. But you might check to make sure there's no major bugs or flaws. Sometimes PC ports can be a bit dodgy. =P

That said, the current price is pretty good (in USD, anyway). The Summer Sale may or may not have a lower price. That's kind of the risk that you take. Conventional wisdom says that they may not have a better sale, since they just had a sale on the Fallout games. But it's hard to say. I guess you'll just have to trust your gut on this one. If you do get it for cheaper, it probably won't be much cheaper. So, there's that.

Even at 40% off, that's still a pretty good price. I have the GOTY edition, purchased at $6.79. I don't anticipate it will get that low again until maybe Fallout 4's official release. It's a gamble for discounts, but well worth investing even at 40% off ($11.99 USD) for the core and all 5 DLC add-on packs. I personally like both equally, but I started out with New Vegas, so I know that one a whole lot better than Fallout 3. New Vegas is what hooked me on the whole Fallout series, so it's definitely worth checking out. Steam has an updated return policy, so if you play 2 hours or less and don't like the game, you can ask for a refund.

For me the reverse is is true. 3 got me hooked. Picked up NV when it came out and I liked it and a friend gave me 1,2, and Tactics and those are interesting as well. NV's customization and crafting system was one of my favorite things about it. 3 had a better overall atmosphere (it felt like a post nuclear war world) but NV lack there of was explained in the lore. That said I would recommend it for you Mafiacow especially at those prices. Mind you I have 3 and NV on the 360 and 1,2 and Tactics are PC only.

That extensive crafting system is precisely what got me hooked. I was a little disappointed with Fallout 3's lack of it, but the atmosphere more than made up for it. I just bought Fallout 1, 2, and Tactics in that franchise pack for it. I'm a little peeved that Fallout 1 is a lot harder than 3 and New Vegas. That point and click system to move, attack, etc. is a little hard to get used to. Haven't started on 2 or Tactics yet, but I'm certainly holding on to them if for no other reason than for collecting everything Fallout.
At this point I have Fallout: New Vegas (originally only had it on PS3, but I liked it so much I bought the PC version too), Fallout 3 (PC), Fallout 1 (PC), Fallout 2 (PC), and Fallout Tactics (PC). Only one I don't have yet is Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel (and of course, Fallout 4 now that it's been officially announced), but I've heard rumors that it was terrible. So terrible, that even the Fallout fan-site, No Mutants Allowed, will verbally abuse you if you dare mention the Brotherhood of Steel game, but I've come to the opinion that they like to talk out their ass a lot. lol

As for Fallout 4, I'm definitely going to keep my eye on it, possibly wait for a few more videos with game play before committing to purchasing the game. I'm not a real big fan of Bethesda or it's subsidiaries. Every game I have played where Bethesda had their hands on it, has been riddled with bugs, bugs that should have been fixed before the official release or patched before they jumped to the next big project. Bethesda has shown to be extremely lazy in their testing. For a while, New Vegas was getting on my nerves because it would freeze up so often. Found the NVSE (New Vegas Script Extender) mod and the NVAC (New Vegas Anti-Crash) mod and that game has since looked and acted way better than it did when it didn't have those mods. I hope Fallout 4 doesn't follow New Vegas' bugged path, but I fear if I hold my breath, I'll pass out knowing Bethesda's track record.

Large open world games have a lot of bugs that take the right circumstances to trigger thus make them hard to even find let alone smash and every patch on games nowadays seems to create new bugs. Considering how complex games are getting I have come to accept the fact that games will be buggy just like OS's are at launch. One way to maybe fix that is open public betas. Overall I was impressed with what I saw last night at the Bethesda Conference and will be picking Fallout 4 at launch.

I'm talking about obvious bugs. We'll use the loading screen as a prime example. Every single game developed by Bethesda has a derp moment where the game decides to lock up at the loading screen, giving you the infinite loading screen bug. What's really sad is that the bug is so easily fixed, that it's done by a script extender mod (mentioned in an earlier post, NVAC) because the author gave up on Bethesda doing their job. An unmodded Skyrim has yet to have the quest "Season Unending" (a ceasefire side-quest) fixed so that players who have not turned in the Jagged Crown to one side or the other, can still turn the quest in and start the ceasefire negotiations. Instead, having the Jagged Crown and not turning in the quest BEFORE starting Season Unending will break the game, making it unplayable and forcing you to reload the game from an earlier save (and then hope like heck you don't run into an infinite loading screen bug). Players have been complaining about it since the bug was found, including how to find the bug. Patches were released, but the quest was never fixed in any of those patches. I buy the game a year or so later and it's still bugged to hell. It's really sad that games that have been released for at least a year, still have a crap load of bugs as if it was still in beta. There is absolutely no excuse for their lazy development. Bethesda seems to be the only one that does this (from the collection of games I personally play). It really says a lot about a developer when the modding community has to create their own patches to make a game less bugged than the un-modded version and continue to create their own patches while the developer continues to ignore the problem. This is the very reason that I'm very skeptical on the quality assurance Bethesda will provide for Fallout 4.

Considering I have never run into those issues in Skyrim XB360 version with probably over 1000 hours played (on non-modded and modded saves). The only issue I ever ran into was on New Vegas with constant auto-save corruption when loading that to this day is unpatched but the game overall is enjoyable. The areas that the aforementioned glitch happens are few and well known thus total data loss (e.g. restart from beginning) is preventable. Gaming on computer is a different beast then on it is on console a fact of which that I am somewhat familiar.(Simcity 4 and Fallout 2 modding) Now running mods have risks that you accept when start using them, something that you should well know. Console gamers will find this out if they haven't already.

Yes, I know the risks of running mods. I also know that I shouldn't have to add mods that fixes bugs ("Unofficial Patches"), just to make the game stable. Those bugs should be fixed before or at release or within the first year after the game's release, depending when the bug was found and the difficulty in tracking and correcting it. New Vegas was really terrible on the PS3 when save files reached around 10 MB. I don't remember the exact size of my save file when I started having loading issues with New Vegas on the PS3, but it was the primary reason I decided to get the PC versions of all Fallout games, since there were less (reported) problems with loading a save file than there were for the PS3 version. Since I don't have an Xbox 360, I don't recall if they too had a problem with loading large save files in New Vegas or not. It's also the reason why when I wanted to check out an Elder Scrolls game (the first one I tried was Skyrim), I decided to go strictly PC for it and skipped getting a console version. I didn't want to get stuck with a large save file for Skyrim and then run into the same problem as New Vegas.

Overall the PS3 versions of Bethesda games had tons of issues due to it's RAM architecture. The 360 had relatively few issues loading save files after the 6 month point on NV and Skyrim. Autosave corruption is an issue (for me anyways) unique to New Vegas as I had not seen it in any other games from them. Sure I had corrupted save on those games before but that was due to me shutting off the console or opening the disk tray on accident, power loss at unfortunate times, or freezes caused by overheating from playing too long.

I would, but I don't have a device that supports it (yet). Thanks to Bethesda for only releasing the iOS version and I've yet to hear news of the official Android version being released yet, if it's even being ported. I did hear that Fallout Shelter knocked Candy Crush Saga off it's pedestal for 2 days since it's initial release on Apple's App Store. Bethesda would be ridiculously stupid not to release an Android version.

I was kind of surprised that it was iOS only. Since they announced the Pip-Boy app for both iOS and Android.

So, I'm glad I forgot to buy Fallout 3 when it was on sale earlier, as it got on even more of a discount with the Steam Sale~~ ^_^
