Gen 1: Red, Blue, Green, Yellow. Colours.
Gen 2: Gold, Silver, Crystal. Metals (though one is a jewel thing...).
Gen 3: Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald. Gems.
Gen 4: Diamond, Pearl, Platinum. Jewels (though one is a metal thing...).
Gen 5: Black, White, BW2. Back to colours.
Gen 6: X, Y. Possibly chromosomes, but most likely axes to take advantage of 3DS.
(That was just to correct any Gen Wunners reading that colours are "all they've ever used")

Also, regarding the RS remakes, I've heard that "Alpha Sapphire. Because Alpha is the first letter in the Greek alphabet, and all life started in the sea. Omega Ruby. Because Omega is the last letter, and land is where all of us have ended up."

    New mega evolutions announced.

Mega Lopunny: Normal/Fighting (Aerilate Ability, which turns Normal-type moves into Flying-type moves)

All can be previewed in this video:

There is also going to be Cosplay Pikachu.

Cosplay Pikachu can dress up as either Pikachu Rock Star, Pikachu Pop Star, Pikachu, Ph.D., Pikachu Belle, or Pikachu Libre, each with their own unique fighting abilities.

    • Pikachu Belle learns the Ice-type move Icicle Crash.
    • Pikachu Libre can battle with Flying Press, a powerful Fighting-type move.

Mega Slowbro and Mega Audio look terrible. Two Pokemon that are terrible to have in your party (except for maybe Slowbro). I hope that isn't the final versions of what they look like. I won't even bother to catch them. They are two rubbish Pokemon that I never liked to begin with.

Another thing that's in the vid is Mega Pidgeot and Mega Beedrill. Have to say I still have fond memories of Pidgeot, might need one if/when I get ORAS.

As someone who missed the X/Y train, but is thinking of getting a 3DS in the future, is there a reason not to skip X/Y? Playing two Pokemon games back to back sounds exhausting. Unobtainable Pokemon aren't really a concern. If I go down the road of collecting them all, I'll find other means of getting them.

I recommend Pokemon X and Y. There were some pretty awesome Pokemon to catch (especially Mewtwo)!! But, I have to say I still think Pokemon Black/White has the best storyline out of all of the Pokemon games. Seeing as it seems to be more philosophical and adult about the world of Pokemon and why they exist.

In that case, what about Black/White 2? I played the first game, thought it was a pretty cool Pokemon game, then never got around to the sequel.

I always stand up for Black/White, but really B/W 2 is sort of extended fluff. Ghetsis without N is not a good dynamic for the enemy team. It also has the problem of the person most against the opponent team is your enemy and at times it feels like you're the pov character to a bigger character. Colme phrased it as you are playing as Ishmael to your rival's Ahab, and I have to agree. Black/White and X/Y do a good job of making your multiple rivals make a sort of sense, granted in the same way (one's the one who appreciates the personal growth and the other who desires strength), but in this one it seems like he downright loathes Plasma and will destroy them even if you ignore them. It is also a direct sequel and it feels like it. Your rivals from the previous game are rather prominent. One's a gym leader and the other is an assistant to the professor who constantly checks in on you. Sometimes this type of game works (I'll argue to the end that Radiant Dawn is a decent sequel to Path of Radiance in the FE series), but here it feels like they realized they "saved the franchise" and this is their endzone dance.
Which is really sad because the silly side game is the best side thing I've ever enjoyed. Making movies is actually really fun. I'd love to make cheesy movies in the subsequent games instead of contests or musicals or other stuff like that. I mean I enjoy X/Y, but the "sidequest" is essentially just more battling that's actually very fun, but not that different from the main game.
So if you want to skip a series of pokemon games, skip Diamond, Pearl, Platinum. But other than that B/W 2 is probably safe to skip.
