Kyoto Animation announced yesterday that their next TV anime, Kyokai no Kanata, would be airing this October here in Japan.

The series is shaping up to be an supernatural action kind of deal, which is exciting for a number reasons. While I doubt the novel source material is all that special, it's extremely exciting to see Kyoto Animation go back to something a bit more action-y. We saw flashes of awesome in Chunibyou, but I've been waiting for a full blown action series from them since they washed their hands of Full Metal Panic!. Hopefully KnK doesn't disappoint in that regard.

Taichi Ishidate is making his directorial debut on this project (he's done single episodes), and Jukki Hanada is in charge of scripting. Miku Kadowaki, animation director on the K-ON! and The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya films, is heading up character designs.

Additional staff includes Mikiko Watanabe as Art Director, Kana Miyata on Color Key work, Hiroyuki Takahashi working on Prop Design, Seiichi Akitake in charge of designing Yomu, Ryuuta Nakagami serving as Director of Photography, and Yota Tsuruoka doing Sound Design.

Character designs have changed quite a bit since the initial television commercial, so I'd advise folks to check out the new key image and Official Site for a host of pics.

With so many heavy hitting monsters airing this fall, it looks like fans of beautiful animation have a lot to look forward to.

    I know I'm excited.

First thoughts, hell yes I've been waiting since the 30 second advertisement was awesome.
Then I see that "character designs have changed quite a bit", bastards....

Upon a closer look it does appear that they have since made the characters faces rounder as to appeal to their usual fan base with the moe designs that they are basically known for. Damn it this looked amazing until they did that, I hate it when the moe is added falsely to characters for the sole purpose of appealing to the viewers. More realistic designs would be better, then again over the top exaggerated characters would again trump that considering this is an action supernatural series.

Well whatever I will watch it considering its themes and the premise still sounds interesting to me, I just hope that it manages to keep up a vastly different combination of genres throughout.

@anyone that might know the original source material, how is the plot of this exactly?
Not really expecting much of a response but thought I'd ask on the off chance someone does know.
