You wake up, it's cold, dark, the smell of mildew invades your senses. Breathing in you try to smell the fresh air, breathing out you release the toxins. As your eyes open, the world doesn't seem any brighter. "This must be a dream." You say out loudly, Only to for the world to slowly come into existence. PROJECT: Paradise; Was the test you signed up for. They had no real description of what the project was you just remember falling asleep.

You are part of a collective, The world around you is shared among everyone, their hopes, dreams, fears, goals, aspirations, everything is part of this world, and through a unique filter you will only see the positive world of the collective, You can live in the world you want today! Building a better community through shared living experiences. The true purpose of this test is to see if we can bring unity to more people through a similar living standard.

When you’re used to waking up to the sound of grenades and mortars, an alarm clock doesn’t seem so bad. Hailing from a small, unknown country buried deep in eastern Europe, Yuri’s home and too many of his waking moments have been embroiled in warfare for as long as he can remember. Civil wars, foreign powers and the rise and fall of tyrannical regimes fed the chaos that haunts him to this day. Even as a child, he was made to use a rifle ever since he was strong enough to hold one. As a result, he has become one of the deadliest people on the planet with years of training, experience, and fatalities to his name.

But the skills he learned on the battlefield hardly have a place in everyday life, and the price he paid for becoming a killing machine was much too high. Burdened with deep scars both physical and mental, Yuri finally left his war-torn home only to find that he was woefully unequipped for a civilized world without unending war. Unfamiliar with even the most rudimentary elements of a peaceful daily life, he signed up for Project Paradise out of desperation, hoping beyond hope that he might finally learn how to function in a peaceful society. Beyond that, he hoped that he might even be able to form the most basic human connections, which he was all but denied until now.

Despite his worries about the future, Yuri felt a vague sense of growing optimism as he signed the final form of his application to Project Paradise.

Jonathan waited at the lobby entrance in the capitol of Project Paradise though it is entirely inside a collective mind, it is quite robust, filled with everyday activities, stores, and social events.

He waited for the new arrivals, Yuri and Mia; he already had their profiles as his boss already uploaded the info to him. Holding a sign up in big letters their names were written.

 

As Yuri made his way into the lobby, he was momentarily overwhelmed at the scene before him. There were so many people gathered in the same place, talking, working, laughing, playing, carrying on with their lives without a care in the world. It was a sight unfamiliar to him, to see so many people in the same place in the complete absence of conflict and strife. The cacophonous sound of their casual chatter was almost disorienting to him, and their complete lack of worry or fear was disconcerting to a man like Yuri who lived his life looking over his shoulder. It all felt so surreal to him, but he knew that this is what "normal" looks like for all of the people around him. He had never felt so out of place. But perhaps one day, he could smile and laugh as easily as they did.

Following the instructions he was given, he arrived at the location where he was told the representative would be and he was there exactly ten minutes early, just as he'd planned. Sure enough, he saw a sign with his name on it and walked over to greet the man holding it. Standing perfectly still, feet together, hands behind his back, he spoke formally to the representative.
"Yuri Kilesso. I would like to extend my gratitude for this opportunity."
He looked over to the woman standing next to him, hesitating for a moment to find a conversation opener.
"Ah...you must be here for Project Paradise as well, yes? Mm. A pleasure to meet you."
He extended his hand for a handshake.

 

Jonathan, looked Yuri and Mia up and down just for a moment. He concluded it was them however he expected something a bit different from both of them. None the less he had a job to do. Reaching outward he gave Yuri the handshake he was waiting for. Quickly he acknowledged Mia.

"Mia, Yuri. It is a pleasure to meet you. And congratulations on getting selected for your own personal paradise!" Jonathan hated the corporate Jargon but he always made everything believable. "Right now we are in the heart of the city. Everyone has their own name for it, but officially we named this place Homestead. It is welcoming and homely so you feel safe and secure."

Putting away the sign he reached into his pockets, it was 2 separate Pocket PC's with very personal itineraries for each of them. reaching his hands out, he let them grab their schedules.

"Now, Before you start on the schedules the first of the itinerary is going to be a psychological evaluation to make sure that you've made it here safe and are still suitable for project paradise. It will automatically update upon completing a task from your itinerary so don't concern yourself with anything beyond your current task."

Jonathan turned around and eagerly called out. "Mia, Yuri. Come on and let me bring you to the first part of your new life, I am so excited to see you start your first chapter."

 

Although he appreciated the gift, Yuri felt a sense of apprehension as he took the complex electronic device from Jonathan. It was exactly the kind of thing he was completely unaccustomed to in his day-to-day life. Even so, his stoic expression did not betray his misgivings and he simply nodded, knowing that this was just another adjustment he was going to have to make.
"I see. Thank you for this."
He studied the device briefly then looked up to Jonathan.
"Technology like this is...not my forte. However, I will put my utmost effort into learning it. I will study it diligently. I will strive to understand its every last function. I will not stop until I make it an extension of myself. I promise you this."
It really was remarkable how Yuri could say this with a completely straight face, with unquestionable sincerity. Afterwards, he put the PC away.

For just a brief moment, a shadow fell over Yuri's face. On his application, he left out some of the more...unsavory parts of his previous life. That probably helped get him in the door, but he dreaded what might come out in a psychological exam. What if he was found unfit for paradise after all? What if his dreams were crushed when he was so close to the goal? He quickly pushed these thoughts to the back of his mind, determined to see things through to the end, wherever the road might lead. He gave a slight nod of approval.
"Very well, then. Lead the way."

 

Jonathan, could see their concerns about the project after he explained the psychological evaluation. Though he wanted to smile knowing full well this was just a formality he didn't change his attitude. In reaffirmation, he nodded at them.

"Mia, Yuri. You've got nothing to worry about in terms of disqualification. If you've made it this far it is nothing but a formality. You will only be ejected if you lie, or withhold critical information from the specialist. We aren't doing machinery or lie detectors as we have full faith in our clients to be open and honest about their past."

As a way to gain their trust Jonathan pulled out his own pocket PC and uploaded his case file to them, his history was no more or no less desirable them it read as follows.

Childhood Trauma, Physical and mental abuse, reactionary behavior from youth. As a teenager got into a lot of scraps, multiple stab wounds on chest, abdomen, and back. Scar tissue confirms it.

Prone to violent outburst.

Status: Rehabilitated, living a normal life. No outburst, community manager, strong leadership skills.

Jonathan smiled as they looked over his history. "I am no longer the man in that file, only a success story from my Time here. If you have any further questions I will gladly answer them."

Jonathan turned away from Mia and Yuri. And began to walk albeit slowly. "Come now, let's begin the start or your new life." He spoke with excitement and glee. "You'll be who you want to be in no time."

 

Though his face didn't show it, Yuri felt a small sense of relief after hearing Jonathan's words of encouragement. He might even dare to hope that there was a chance to find the life he was searching for, here in this seemingly-utopic society that, by Jonathan's account, seems dedicated to fixing broken people like himself. He still could not bring himself to let go of his lingering doubts, knowing all too well that those things which seem to good to be true often are, but he took this as a good omen at least. He gave a simple, unassuming nod to Jonathan.
"Very well, no more questions at this time. Please, lead on."
With that, he followed Jonathan to wherever the exam was meant to take place.

 

Jonathan walked, for what seemed to be a brief moment before turning to them and wrly smiling.

"We're here." He spoke very matter of factly. Though it seemed like nothing, the building in front of them had no signage, and looked very lived in. The stories that could be gleaned from the outside alone were more than could he grasped. It was shabby but in a charming way.

"When you go in just sit down anywhere, the doctors are already expecting you. I know you likely omitted some details of your life, as everyone does. But I assure you for complete rehabilitation it is in your best interest to get everything out now. After you get out come and speak to me again, I will be waiting right here for you." He paused for a moment knowing he would have to address privacy concerns. "Each seat is surrounded by soundproofing, as a heads up. So nothing either of you say will be heard by the others. Group therapy will be offered later. But that isn't until we think you're ready." He paused once more.

"After this, come talk to me again. You should get to know your new home."

 

Yuri gave a slight bow and replied.
"Very well. I will return as soon as possible."

He walked into the building, steeling his mind for whatever may happen next. He found a room as he was told to and stepped inside, standing at attention in front of the awaiting doctor. He introduced himself in his usual stoic manner of speech.
"Yuri Kilesso. I am here for the psychological evaluation."
In truth, he was mentally overprepared for the exam to come. He had been interrogated before, in a particularly dark time of his life when he had been captured by rebel insurgents. Thankfully, he was rescued the day after his capture, but what happened in that 24 hours of Hell is first on the long list of memories that Yuri wishes he could forget. In his mind, he knew that this exam would be nothing like that time, but he still felt himself tense up as a sense of anxiety crept up on him. At the same time, the irony of this situation was not lost on him and he found it a little amusing that the purpose of this questioning was not to withhold information, but to divulge as much as possible, which he was more or less prepared to do.
"I am prepared for questioning at any time, doctor."
