Peach Girl: Tanned Skin = ...slut?

I feel like writing a review for this anime, but there's something I still can't quite fathom.

Since when does having tanned skin make you a slut? I understand people can be very judgmental, but this isn't an accurate representation of the mindset of a high school student... or at least I don't think it is. I don't remember too much about this anime to make a detailed explanation as to the instances when this became a major problem, but it still doesn't make any sense. How does being tan associate someone with such a title? I haven't seen this happen in real life, but I don't know if this can be considered realistic.

What i'm curious about is this, is this type of judgement actually realistic?

Sunburning in Asia has a heavy note of being lower in the social hierarchy, so they rebel by doing it for that purpose. And they do have a reputation in anime for being loose cannons that don't respect society's rules, including "normal" female refinement. So yeah, I don't know if that's the case but really, it's one of those social things where because you look a certain way, they expect you to act a certain way.

This makes a lot more sense than just tanned skin. If this was the intended purpose, I find it a little odd that the manga was first published in 1998 when this trend was dying out. I also never heard it mentioned in the anime... or at least I don't remember it ever being mentioned. But I guess it's still possible.

Well even when Ganguro style itself sorta died out delinquent girls might still tan themselves to rebel or some might do it to stand out and pick up guys. Which is why they are often viewed and sluts. Even if they don't take it as far as the Ganguro style does tanning like that is associated in that culture as being rebellious and having lose morals.

 

My significant other watches peach girl. Oh my goodness I can't stand it.
