Aniplex began streaming a promotional video on Monday for the Kizumonogatari VR projection mapping video experience. The video previews the experience for PlayStation VR that features the vampire character Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade.

Kayac, Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Asia (SIEJA), and Aniplex announced on Monday that they are partnering to develop the project. The project uses VR projection mapping to create a new video experience. The companies announced the project to celebrate the announcement of the release of the Kizumonogatari anime films' DVD and Blu-ray Disc on July 12.

An advance viewing event will be held on May 20, and the project's official website is accepting applications to attend until May 10. SIEJA's Kenjō Akiyama and Kayac's Kiyoyuki Amano will also attend an event to showcase the newest PlayStation VR content at the Unite 2017 event in Tokyo on May 8 and May 9. They will hold a talk event about the Kizumonogatari VR project.

The first film in the Kizumonogatari anime film trilogy, Kizumonogatari Part 1: Tekketsu, premiered in Japan on January 8, 2016. The second film, Kizumonogatari Part 2: Nekketsu, opened in Japan on August 19. The third film opened in Japan on January 6. Aniplex of America screened all three films in the United States and Canada.

Tatsuya Oishi, who directed the Bakemonogatari anime series, directed the film trilogy at the anime studio SHAFT. Akiyuki Simbo is credited as chief director. Akio Watanabe and Hideyuki Morioka designed the characters. Yota Tsuruoka directed the sound, and Satoru Kousaki composed the music.

Kizumonogatari is the third volume in NisiOisin's Monogatari book series and is a prequel to Bakemonogatari. The novel tells the story of how protagonist Koyomi encounters the female vampire that would turn him and his journey to return to his normal life. Vertical licensed the novel, and released it in December 2015.
