Today is that time of year again. Friday the 13th. Where western superstition claims the day to be unlucky.
With the association of the number 13 being feared what makes this day hold such superstition? What history does it yield to be known to us as such a day.

Well the superstition surrounding this day may have sprouted up in the Middle Ages, "originating from the story of Jesus' the last supper and crucifixion" in which there were 13 individuals present in the Upper Room on the 13th of Nisan Maundy Thursday, the night before his death on Good Friday. While there is evidence of both Friday and the number 13 being considered unlucky, there is no record account of the two items being referred to as especially unlucky in conjunction before the 19th century.

An early documented reference in English history occurs in Henry Sutherland Edwards' 1869 biography of Gioachino Rossini, who died on a Friday 13th. Rossini was surrounded to the last by admiring friends; and if it be true that, like so many Italians, he regarded Fridays as an unlucky day and thirteen as an unlucky number, it is remarkable that on Friday 13th of November he passed away.

It is also possible that the publication in 1907 of Thomas W. Lawson's popular novel Friday, the Thirteenth, contributed to disseminating the superstition. In the novel, an unscrupulous broker takes advantage of the superstition to create a Wall Street panic on a Friday the 13th.

After going through the history books a little one can say there are similarities & events surrounding this day. Regardless if the day is or isn't unlucky I want to know what you believe in. Are you superstitious? Or are there only certain superstitions in which you believe in. If so what are they; and why do you believe in them?

As for me I believe in the superstition that breaking a mirror leads to ones bad luck. When I was younger around 11-12 I broke my mother's hand mirror. Following that day my younger brother and myself gathered some of the neighborhood kids to a game of baseball in our backyard. When I went up to pitch I threw a fast ball straight down home-plate but our pitcher's Aunt hollered for him at that very moment. He stood up and turned to face her as the ball went straight past him and into my father's Chevy S-10 breaking the windshield. Later that afternoon I was grounded for breaking the windshield and further grounded for the breaking of the hand mirror. For the remaining 2 months of my summer break after schools end I was grounded.

I'm not superstitious in the least. I only care about empirical evidence.

But I do still throw salt over my shoulder every time I tip over a salt shaker. It's a habit that I got when I was young and my mom told me it was bad luck. Even though I don't believe in it, I've just never taken the time to break the habit.

I do not believe in superstition, it believes in me.

That is why bad things happen to me.

No. I'm not superstitious at all. I love the number 13 and black cats. I don't break mirrors because that's a waste of good furniture. Just remember for all those unlucky instances of the number 13 there are millions of other times nothing happened. It's a number that is all.

Somewhat am ... but I try not to show it and I don't enforce it on others either.... I love black cats and own one (Some days, I question if he is a cat)... but I'm slightly superstitious especially on Halloween and Friday the 13ths. I wear a lucky charm on me because I'm always receiving bad luck.
