to obsessed?

Just a quick question. do you guys think is possible to be too obsessed with anime? I was in town today and i saw someone cosplaying Ryokuo Matoi from kill la kill in broad daylight with no cons in sight. sorry for this thread. Cosplay is fine and dandy but only at conventions or other appropriate locations. It makes people that anime look really weird. hope i don't hurt anyone's feelings.

 

To be fair, that person could have been cosplaying for any reason. Perhaps they had just come from a party or event? Perhaps they just enjoy cosplaying from time to time? You really can't be sure and it doesn't necessarily speak to the presence of an obsession, nor does it necessarily constitute obsessive behavior.

That said, it's possible to become obsessed with anything. (Too obsessed might be a bit redundant. =P) People become obsessed with sports, video games, television, anime, movies, reading, exercising, eating, and really just about any other activity that you can think of. There's absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying any of these things, or with allowing them to play a large role in your life.

The issue comes when you begin to ignore reality, disregard your own health and well-being, and become disconnected with all other things in your life. That is when enjoyment and fandom becomes obsession, and that is something that needs to be kept in check.

There are many societal and personal factors that can play into obsession, but it varies from person to person. But, to answer your question: yes, it is possible to have an unhealthy obsession with anime. But it's up to you to know when to draw the line.

 

I've known football fans to wear their teams jerseys, hats, licence plates, banners, pendants etc etc. Too obsessed? Our society doesn't think so.

 

just like any hobby/activity open for human consumption, anime is no different. and just like any hobby/activity there are pros and cons for anime obsession.

Just to be clear: There's nothing wrong with blasting Japanese songs in your car, or having figurines. But it crosses the line when you go apeshit as soon as someone says something about your hobby, or putting really bad photoshops of yourself with a waifu, or making fake accounts so you can talk to your waifu.

Just don't be Thad and you should be fine.

I think that as long as you're mot shoving your interest in it in people's faces or hurting anyone, there isn't reason to be concerened.
