I agree. And I think that's the best course of action. I think that if our population grows exponentially (much, much greater than what it is now) or if the coasts fall into the sea from global warming, we may eventually have to develop those areas, urbanize them. But I think that developing select areas is the way to go, currently.

 

I feel bad for you guys, ever since the Iraq War you've been going down hill, how do you feel about this?

State of the Union, the War on Terrorism was just a cover-up.

 

Well, it's getting better. We're doing much better than we were under the Bush administration. We don't have nearly as many troops deployed overseas, we're finally coming out of a recession, and same-sex marriage seems to be winning battles in the federal courts and, likely, the Supreme Court as well.

We've barely touched immigration. Our defense budget is still at silly proportions (we spend more than the next 9 top spenders combined). We now have affordable healthcare, but are still not regulating pharmaceutical companies or working toward a free healthcare system, only creating more customers for insurance companies. Our education system is laughable. And our justice system is, largely, ineffective.

So we've made progress in some areas, but we still have a lot of work to do.

@BaconMan8910 I'm not so sure that we're doing any better with this administration than we did with the previous. Sure, SOME things have improved, but on the flip side of the coin, other things have gotten worse. Things won't really improve in our nation until we have people in charge who actually give a shit about the people & the country instead of about politics & kickbacks.
I'm not gonna say the American dream is dead, but it sure does seem to be lying dormant. Just my humble opinion.

 

I'm gonna say that it's dead. Hell, I'll go one step further and say that it's a lie. Sure, you can work hard and go places, but you can also work hard and die in poverty. Because not only is pulling yourself up by your bootstraps not always doable, it's often not enough.

I think we are better off under this administration. For several reasons, a few of which I stated above. We now have affordable healthcare (a bill that isn't perfect but is certainly a step in the right direction). We have come out of (shortly following Bush leaving office) a recession to rival the Great Depression. We have ceased (mostly) ground operations in Iraq and Afghanistan (wars based on lies that costed thousands of lives and $1.1 trillion for the Iraq War, alone). We've also seen the end of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell", reformed student loans, an initiative to allow for 2 years of free community college, increased investment in renewable energy, increased fuel economy standards, and more.

I honestly can't think of much that has gotten worse, at least on a a national scale.

There is the issue of funding, however, which can allow certain things to slip into disrepair. But who knows how Congress divvies that up? In truth, efforts to change our budget lead to grid lock or, as we've seen, shutdowns. That doesn't mean we shouldn't try to change it, but that seems to be a constant issue, less of an administration-specific issue.

All politicians play the game. Some more so than others. But we have to be careful not to assume they are all equal. That's a fallacy that can quickly lead to ignorance and indifference. It can lead to being defeated by the system.

We won't ever see everything improve. Not all at once, not under the same administration. Because all politicians play the political game, that's just not possible. Which means we have to be objective and avoid an "all or nothing" attitude.

 

The tailspin that we've gone into completely mind blowing. To be honest, I'm not sure we'll ever get back on track. We seem hell bent on self destruction. I'm hoping that I'm wrong, but it's looking pretty bleak.

What, specifically, are you referring to? I'm not sure that I follow.

That sounds better? We actually spend more money to execute people than we do on life sentences and up to 4% of executions in Texas alone (the state with the most executions) are of innocent or wrongly convicted people.

 

Specifically? Hmmm.. where to start? Voter turn out (a fundamental part of what our nation stands for & one of the rights civil rights advocates fought so hard for)? Monsanto (giving new meaning to the term food poisoning)? Gun control (really dug your proposal on this issue, btw)? Same sex marriage (not even sure why anyone would even be against this in this day & age)? Inferstructure? Foreign wars? Won't even get started on riots (aka reason to start looting) etc etc. Just seems to me that we have so many issues that shouldn't even be issues drowning us.

 

Isn't the UN trying to get you guys top stop the Death Penalty?

 

I agree that we do have many "non-issues" plaguing us. Same-sex marriage and equal rights being a prime example of something that should never be debated in the first place. But, as I mentioned above, it is getting better. It's taking a hell of a lot longer than it should, but we are working and making progress on most of these issues.

Same-sex marriage bans are being struck down by federal courts, we've removed all of our "combat troops" from the Middle East, and the economy is beginning to recover. Issues like firearm regulation and systemic racism that plagues our criminal justice system (which is leading to the protests and riots) are not only political issues but also cultural issues. It's going to take not only legislation but an effort to educate and create a dialogue between all parties in order to solve these issues.

Yeah. They try to get us to do a lot of things. But then they usually get shouted down by the masses crying "but mah freedomz!" Our media and politicians (conservatives in particular) have no love for the UN. They see it as an affront to our sovereignty and believe that the U.S. should be able to make its own policies on everything, regardless of international opinion. Hell, we didn't even sign the UN ordinance banning the use of napalm on civilians until President Obama took office (something that was proposed and agreed upon by the other world powers after the Vietnam War).
