Okay let me start off by saying I do not have a 3DS period. my brother has one but when I heard there was a new model comming I figured I'd just wait. Well it's been announced for the 13th of next month for America but it's the XL version.

So should I get this at release or wait to see if they release the normal sized version? I do want to et a 3DS eventually and the upgraded model has some nice features but I don't know if I want the XL version or not. What are the chances of Nintendo releasing the normal sized one any time soon? Or is it actually really worth the extra cash to get the XL version over the normal sized one?

There is already a 'normal size' one. It is just called the Nintendo 3DS :p You can buy it in different colours or with different skins. Depends what you want to use the 3DS XL for. I have a 3DS and I'm more than happy with it! I've got quite a few games for it as well!! It's definitely got a good library of games to buy for it!! I can highly recommend just getting a 3DS in general. Unless you want to use the other features of the XL, which include longer battery life and a bigger screen. Which I can certainly see the benefits of. But, seeing as I have a regular 3DS, I see no point in me spending more money on exactly the same console with more battery life and a slightly bigger screen, with improved 3D effects. I hardly play the games for the 3D effect. But, seeing as you don't have one, then maybe getting an XL is better seeing as the battery will last you longer. I think the battery is fine on a regular one, it lasts me a whole day if I put it to sleep!! (Which I will do when I go to conventions). So it's up to you!

........ re-read my post. I'm talking about the NEW 3DS and for some reason Nintendo decided to say "fuck you" to America for once (Normally they screw over Austrailia or something) and only offered us the XL version at launch. They might eventually offer the normal sized version in the US as well but on the 13th the XL is the only one being offered.

The new model has a lot of new features over the old one including an extra control stick built in, two extra shoulder buttons, and 3D that you don't have to be in a sweet spot in for it to work. Also some games will only really work properly on the new 3DS due to these improvements. So if I'm getting a 3DS I want the new one.

But what I'm debating is whether to get the XL at launch or wait and hope for the normal sized one which they will hopefully release in the US eventually (goddamn region locking). But from what you said XL is the better choice if I don't have normal?

The 3DS XL is an upgrade for the 3DS series. Bigger screen, improved hardware and software, and a few extra controls (C Stick, ZL and ZR). Getting a "normal" version of the new XL series would be nothing more than a downgrade, since you'll be shrinking your screen. If smaller screens is your thing though, you can always wait to see if they'll release the new models with a normal screen.

And yes, Veritas, there are new Nintendo 3DS models, just not in the US at the moment. The UK website has both a normal and XL model, both the same specifications (other than screen and handheld size). One just has a bigger screen (XL). The US website only has the XL models. The Ninendo marketing team probably found that Nintendo customers preferred bigger screens and figured normal screens wouldn't sell well.

Just go with the XL model. Unless you're so desperate for it to fit in your pocket, or you really want the buttons to be coloured like the SNES controller, the XL is better in just about every way.

Okay then thanks everyone. I just wasn't sure if it was worth the price increase and if I wanted to wait I could always borrow my brothers until I got my own. But I guess I'll get the New XL.

I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone else mention this. BUT, you're going to need to buy the charger to the new 3DS. Nintendo doesn't want to include it this time.

    Read about it here

Ah OK, I am from the UK. So that would explain the different models being released!!

Oh yeah, I forgot about that LoL. That happened to me! In fact, I just checked I have always had a 3DS XL!! Just not this new model. I have just checked the Nintendo website. I see, hmm looks quite good you might as well get it!! I think having an extra C controller might be quite useful for playing the Zelda games!!

I already knew that but that's likely not changing even if I were to wait for a normal sized one. So either way that can't be helped

Besides my younger brother has the older model and from what I've read the new one didn't change it's charging port so the older one should work. Although his is a normal 3DS not an XL so I'll have to use the cable not the induction pad thing. Although I might get a proper XL charger later but for now I'll just share a charger with my brother.
Yeah I think one of the main reasons they added the C-stick was for better camera control which is crucial for some games.

Yeah the customizable face plate was kind of cool but its not worth waiting till god knows when for the regular version to come out in the US.

Wow I didn't hear about the having to buy a f***ing charger. What the hell? Anyway I think the new Majora's Mask 3D and Xenoblade 3D will only work on the new 3DS but I could be wrong. I'm just gonna stick with getting a regular 3DS unless I can't play Majora's Mask 3D on the regular one.
