The download section is now reopened to forum members only. In order to view the download section, please register an account.

Within the one day of the download section being locked we had a bunch of accounts registered and I had a few PMs from people asking what happened. I'm under the understanding that a partially working download section is better than a completely closed one.

So we will be doing a trial run to see how the forum activity goes as opposed to how much ad revenue is lost from making the download section members only.

The incentive for us being more forum accounts and hopefully ( but might not necessarily mean) more posts and activity. This will also drive away a portion of people who will basically be saying "Screw registering, Ill go somewhere else" and that was my problem at the time it was originally discussed as this is where we will lose money. But one person introduced themselves already so at this point I guess more forum members are more important than more money as more forum activity will eventually get us both activity and money. Not entirely sure but we'll see what the ad revenue looks like after the next payout.

I'm open to suggestions, comments or criticism about this. Please post below.

should be fine a lot sites don't even have a download section, registering isn't asking to much to use the section imo

it was back when DTR was up. it was something about the "points system" where a registered has to accumulate points in order to watch/download an anime. it was rejected because it would just make things worse and our visitors will look for other free sites.

Ah suggested on DTR and not DT, was probably ignored for a reason ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

But after some searching we're one of the few sites, one of the only dubbed sites even, who offers something like this. When people are looking on streaming sites for downloads they're ruling out torrenting for a reason. And considering our registration process is so quick it's more beneficial than looking for another site.

I'm on the fence about this still but I'm not opposed to actually trying it so we can properly gauge how successful it is.

Registering to access the downloads section is the best way to cut down anonymous leechers that don't want to bother giving back to the community, which is good. I've seen a lot of sites do this, and some even go so far as to require a reply to a thread to view a link or download an attachment (both are plugin based). There's even a plugin (available for MyBB though) that supports making a user give a "thanks" click on the author's original post before links or attachments become available. I think it would be worth looking into adding some kind of "thank you" or "like" requirement/supporting plugin for XenForo (if one is available).

Yep, having a minimal post count, as well as other things, to access the download section was suggested and discussed but that cuts down the activity even more. Still have to take into account how lazy people are and instead of going through thhat process they'd rather move on to another site which isn't so strict. And then there goes a percentage of our traffic. Doing it this way keeps traffic loss to a minimum so we're not completely killing some of the sites income.

Plus this is supposed to help with forum traffic as well. Forcing people to participate doesn't make them inclined to stick around. I've seen plenty of sites which do this and you'll get those generic one line responses in 'X' amount of threads and then they just disappear once they get what they want. Giving them an option to post, along with the welcome PM suggesting what areas to start posting in makes it all less forceful.

So do I have permission to force them into my cult of personality? It's the best way to keep them in the fold ;)

On a more serious note I think this is an ideal way to do things especially if it "could" increase the forum population. The lurkers will have an excuse to join the community and the people who don't even know we have a forum will get barred entry. Hopefully we have a collection of lurkers.

Honestly I come here for the forum anyway so naturally that would sound fine to me.
