At first I simply laughed this off when I heard about it yesterday, really stopping piracy? Hasn't America threatened that and managed to do nothing much apart from taking down Mega? So I didn't really care about this announcement.
However not too long ago more info was added on other message boards with a list of some of the sites they plan to target, of which my current sub site I use almost exclusively is on. The other site I use for subs before this new one is also on it, and the site that I first began watching anime on is also there.
3 of the sites that I use are listed, I'm kind of getting nervous because if my current sub site with the amazing quality streams does actually go down, and the other two as well then what the hell am I meant to do? They are also targeting some torrent sites so if this does manage to get through goodbye to them as well

It is idiotic to think that anime would even be widely spread without the internet, doing this will completely ruin the fan base outside Japan. Shit all anime is on TV here and the stuff being released on DVD I'm not interested in.

Well time to get a social life and start being much more active instead of spending hours watching animated people live their lives.
This is the perfect time for the despair theme in the avatar of the week club with this announcement.

i dont know man. im on the same boat as you. wait... are we?

well at least i now know someone is planning to have a life.

in all seriousness, well this news scared the shit out of me. our country is not that really with a great impression to the world when it comes to digital piracy. japan and its allies could atleast ip block us and when it comes to going to their servers. yeah torrents would be the safety net for the pirates but that wont do good. i dont do torrents as i rely on direct links.

Well from what I understand there are at least 2 reasons to not immediately panic

    1. They are just sending take down requests. No word on any further actions beyond that
    2. Their main focus seems to be guiding people to legal alternatives so while some sites may go down the big ones will probably dodge it.
I looked over a few articles about it and none of them mentioned anything more than sending requests and spreading info about legal alternatives. Since plenty of sites have gotten take down requests before I don't think this is too much to worry about unless the requests this time as special or something. Plus with them targetting so many it seems like they are just hoping some will accept the offer for free alternatives and die quietly.

I'm not so sure that is the entire way it will be though @Metazoxan . While it did read that way to me initially, simply seeing my favourite sub site listed as one of the targets of these actions whatever they really are scared the hell out of me. I almost exclusively use that sub site, IF that goes down I essentially have 4 options.
    1 stop watching anime
    2 only watch dubs
3 start downloading [not really an option]
4 accept really low quality vids instead of the brilliant quality I have been watching everything in.

The whole legal alternative idea sounds good but when you really think about it, this is a legal Japanese site. It could be region locked, have no subs, possibly need an account to watch with registration being entirely in Japanese or anything really. Also the stats of the legal site is ridiculous, I read it will have 250 shows or something, my sub site I use has over 3700 titles on it so far, I can't settle for a site I would have to pay to use that won't even have shows I'm interested in.

What do we want? Free streams. When do we want it? Forever.

Hmmm... Not sure what I think of this. Anti-piracy is kind of a trigger word for me because of what America tried to get away with (SOPA) and what Youtube keeps doing. I think it's BS most of the time, but I do understand why they would do something like that. I pirate anime and movies but only because when it comes to stuff like that, the companies that make it will always have the money. The people who buy will always, always, out number the people who pirate... unless the movie, game, series or whatever is complete shit but that's a different story.

My thoughts on this is that it won't be as big of a hit like it was here with the take down of Megaupload and the other sites that closed down due to it.

Or you could go on CR. Depending on the series, they allow it to be watched in 1080 for free.

30 seconds of ads to watch an episode really isn't that bad and you're not taking money away from anybody.

Why won't you watch it on CR?
Because you have to wait a week to watch new releases for free?
They need money, like everybody, so obviously they'll give advantages to donators.

@Negi-Springfield CR isn't really an option, their selection is really limited compared to my current sub site. It isn't just about the new releases [although I like watching them as soon as possible so waiting a week is shit I won't do] but the older shows as well as virtually unheard of series. They don't have stuff I am currently watching which is already a bad sign, also checked a few other shows and they aren't viewable to me because the license doesn't cover Aus.
It is a really bad selective site, your options with it are essentially be in America or only watch the really popular series.
I also watched a short series on it once, 3 minute long eps with ads spaced every minute, some of which went for a minutes length as well. I am definitely not fond of them at all.

I'll just wait to see what happens, nothing else I can do after all.

I see. I live in the US so Crunchy was pretty much made for me (lucky!) and I don't mind waiting a week with some series. So I try to use crunchy when I can.

    I see, it makes sense.
Being in North America, I have access to their whole collection (thanks to the NAFTA), so the thought of its Australian version having smaller library never occured to me.

Oh it is still the exact same site but the licenses seem to cover newer shows only for international streaming. Everyone has heard of Gurran Lagann right, yeah this site simply brings up
    "Availability Information
Sorry, due to licensing limitations, videos are unavailable in your region."
The show I first got into watching anime with isn't even streamable for me, and the Aussie distributor that I got the DVD from only has the first 2 eps up for streaming as well. Good thing the illegal JD was around to watch it on back then otherwise I wouldn't be with you guys now, it is that simple.

How about an example without an entry on DT, well what about Slam Dunk? I plan to watch this soon after finishing Ippo but that message comes up as well and they don't have the movies either. Oh and speaking of Ippo CR only has the 3rd season up for streaming so unless you've seen the first two via other means it is useless.
As far as I'm concerned sites like these are the best source of advertisement for the industry, unless they make a legal site that has every series/movie/OVA etc available for all countries they should stop with this bullshit. Anime has only really become a culturally significant product because of the internet making it so widely available.

I think Crunchyroll has it's place. If we try to support sites like this we send a message we do care about the industry and aren't just a bunch of greedy pricks who want everything for free as easily as humanly possible. Since I'm getting the anime for free anyway I can live with a few advertisements and a delay with new shows. Except for ones in the new release club or a couple I just can't wait for.

But I do try to use Crunchyroll whenever possible. It doesn't really change much but it doesn't hurt either. Plus if enough people use it the site and library will grow.

Haven't read anyone else's posts in this thread. Too much of a wall of text for me at this time of night. The fact that they are going to redirect people to sites where they will be charged seems pretty stupid. The fact that people are not paying in the first place, suggests they need to be redirected to sites like wakanim or crunchyroll instead, where it is free and legal to do so. That makes more sense to me, do you really expect a pirate to hand over his/her gold?

I wouldn't say this affects me very much. Lately I haven't been watching as much anime as I used to and the ones that I do are on TV. I've never really cared for new released anime since I'm not a big fan of subs and I don't mind waiting till its dubbed (thats what I did with AOT). I'm with @Metazoxan as I am currently support other legal way of watching anime. I mostly use Hulu, Netflix and Crackle (VERY VERY rarely) and I recently learned that I can sync my cable account to Adult swim so I can watch their whole library of shows, including the anime they have. like @Metazoxan said, the only drawbacks I see are the commercials (and those wont kill you except maybe the ones on Crackle lol) and the fact those services won't have the biggest libraries or the latest episodes. Don't get me wrong, I still love this site and still use it (mostly for the community) but I try to limit myself and watch a series that isn't on any of the other places I go too.
