2 Ukrainian military fighter jets shot down

Two Ukrainian military jets were shot down Wednesday in the eastern part of the country, where pro-Russian rebels have fought against government forces, a Ukrainian military office said.

The pilots ejected, the office said. Information on their condition wasn't immediately available.

An air defense system shot down the jets after the pilots completed a task in Dmytrivka, a village in Ukraine's Donetsk region near the border with Russia, the military press office said.

Sergei Kavtaradze, an aide to rebel leader Alexander Borodai, the Prime Minister of the self-declared Donetsk People's Republic, told CNN that the two jets had been shot down by rebel fighters using a shoulder-fired missile system.

But Col. Andriy Lysenko, a spokesman for the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council, said preliminary information suggested the missiles might have been launched from inside Russia.

The planes were flying at an altitude of 5,200 meters (17,000 feet) when they were hit, he said.

 

Sigh, this is getting ridiculous. I mean tensions haven't been this high since the height of the cold war, I don't understand how Putin doesn't know that this will lead to increased sanctions that will hurt his economy and lead to increased support for an increasingly angry government in Kiev.

 

I think we should change Hall of the Elders to Current Affairs at this rate!

 

It seems like he has to know, but just doesn't seem to care. He's showing blatant disregard for the UN and the international community.

 

seems to me putin gives no shits, as said tensions are at a boiling point, there economy may be suffering but its not enough to destroy a nation, and such a large nation at that. Im not sure what Putins game is , but the UN need to step up and really start to sort all this out otherwise there is no point to the UN. The UN so far have been a let down in there lack of actions. Simply sanctioning a country is just a slap on the wrist

 

Welp, this will eventually get out of hand and I don't think we can do a thing about it.
