When his sleeve was touched, Alan reflexively pulled his arm back with a small gasp and a brief look of surprise on his face. But just as quickly as it changed, his demeanor relaxed again and he couldn't help but laugh at how foolish he must have looked, even if it was only for a brief moment.
"My apologies. Actually, the current condition of my arms is not from a bite or any recent injury. It, ah...it goes back much farther than that."
His head and his voice dropped ever so slightly.
"And it is not a very pleasant topic on conversation."
As soon as those words came out, old memories began to flood in. He absentmindedly started rubbing the arm he'd just pulled back.
"Scars that don't heal. Pain that never really goes away. Sometimes, I can still feel the flames as if they were burning right in front of me at that very moment."
He closed his eyes only for a few seconds, but in that brief time, an all-too-familiar scene from days long past started to play out in his mind.

He could see the laboratory again. Co-workers, friends, family, even the woman he loved more than anything in the world. Oh, how they burned, smoldered and charred until all that was left were the hellish memories emblazoned into his memory. Realizing that there was still someone else in the room, he quickly regained his senses, opened his eyes and started speaking in his usual cadence once again.
"Ah, sorry again, I certainly didn't mean to space out like that. The long and short of it is that these injuries are nothing new, and...well, honestly, I just prefer to keep treating them myself."
With that, he started gathering up his gear and supplies, moving them into the other room as he was asked.
"Amelia, was it? I've always had a lot of respect for the medical fields; I don't have the stomach to poke around in the human body like you do. That's part of the reason why I've always stuck with chemistry. In fact, I was doing pretty well as a professor a few towns over before...well, you know. Armageddon."
When everything was moved, he sat down with a relieved sigh.
"So, seeing as you're a nurse, have you got any weird or funny stories to share from your time treating people in the postapocalypse?"

Naomi thought about what he said, it was true, traveling with that many supplies made her an easy target especially being on her own. Her original plan was to be with her father. She spaced out and didn't hear the part where he mentioned that she should be thankful it was him and about Isa
she suddenly had a solemn look on her face as she thought of her father. Things would have been different if he was with her. She suddenly felt the bindings on her ankles being cut which snapped her out of her thoughts. When he had stepped back, she rubbed her ankles for a moment. She listened as he began to speak but the moment Terry mentioned her not being free to go, her gaze shot up to look at him.
"Wait.... you're not letting me leave?"
She began to stand and walk towards them, her right hand moved behind her back, holding a small blade which she had hidden in her boots, as Terry was speaking to Isa his back turned towards Naomi, she clenched the blade tightly

Isa who never took her eyes off the girl was listening to Terry when he mentioned Isa talking to her, she only gave a "humph" in response. Just as Terry went to turn and ask the girl what skills she had. Isa stepped forward, but still remained behind Terry and gave the girl a threatening look, she had her hand at her hip ready to grab the handgun...

Naomi seeing Isa stepping forward with her gaze and Terry turning to face her, made Naomi freeze on the spot. Her eye shot from one to the other for a moment. It was then that she realized she had no chance against these two at least not together. Putting on an act, she pretended to look taken aback from his question."
    "Skills?"
she thought for a moment, quickly tucking the blade in her waist band. Should I tell them the truth or make up some random skill. She decided to tell them only a portion of what she could do. She moved her hand to her side and clutched the hem of her shorts. looking at Terry as she spoke. Looking at Isa made her a feel uneasy
"I know basic hunting and survival skills and how to handle a blade"

Isa seeing the girls other hand, relaxed, she moved back to leaning against the door frame. She kept her glare at Naomi
"I guess she isn't completely useless"
she emphasized 'completely' and 'useless' as she personally saw the girl as in fact being useless. It was a compliment ...to a degree. She looked Naomi up and down before continuing
"If you try anything stupid, I wont go easy on you"
she spoke in a threatening tone, before turning on a heel and leaving the room.

Naomi nodded in response to Isa as if understanding. 'shit this is gonna be harder than I thought, I better lay low'. She looked over at Terry remembering that he mentioned preparations, she was curious as to what he meant and did they involve her
"what did you mean by preparations?"
    hoping to catch some info

Isa made her way back to the jeep and continued to work on fixing the tire knowing Terry would probably be out to scold her for threatening the girl any minute. She had no intentions in being buddy buddy with their so called guest. She let out a huff of disgust as she let another cigarette she was still curious as to how this young child got ahold of a military grade jeep and began kicking herself mentally for not asking. Then again the last thing she wanted to do was strike up a conversation with the girl. She rolled her eyes on the thought, knowing that Terry would probably somehow get the answers.

Amelia nodded in response when he mentioned that the wound goes back and that it wasn't a pleasant topic. Being a nurse and seeing what all her patients had gone through, she knew full well what he meant and responded gently with
    "I understand"
Seeing him standing there in a daze, she figured he was remembering when the wound happened, what lead up to it and more. She remained quiet for a moment listening, when he mentioned "they" and burning right in front of him. Her heart ached as she knew that he suffered a great loss, and could understand where he came from as she too suffered loss. She could only stare at him, wondering what he went through, the look on her face was one of understanding and sadness. Something she was all to familiar with, with the way the world had become and being one of the survivors, everyone had suffered loss.
When he apologized to her, she gave him a gentle smile
"Don't be sorry, it happens and I completely understand. If at any time you would like me to take a look, please don't hesitate to ask"

As he gathered his supplies and moved them to another room. She quickly walked over and grabbed some water for herself and the new guest then followed not to far behind him. She handed him a bottled water and took a seat herself on an old couch she managed to collect a while back. If one were took look around the room they would feel a sense of normalcy. It looked almost like a living room with a few rooms connected to it. The furniture had wear and tear from the apocalypse so it wasn't luxurious but it was cozy, at least to Amelia's standard.

She and the medical staff were fortunate enough to be given one of the smaller warehouses, located near the dock, to work and live in. Half of the section contained rooms for her and other medical members to work on patients, which also contained their medical supplies. The other was living quarters divided among them. Amelia took a section that contained about 5 office rooms, which all connected to a small lobby, where they were currently sitting. The extra rooms allowed her to watch over any patients that needed over night monitoring. Being close to the docks allowed for easy escape if a huge hoard came through.

Amelia looked up when said her name and smiled
"Call me Lea, its a nick name I picked up since this all started. I guess its easier"
she shrugged then took a sip
"Believe it or not I was studying to be a nurse right before the apocalypse happened, I was top of my class. I wanted to help save lives. But since the apocalypse I kind of just moved up a bit... to doing everything."
    she chuckled a little
    "as for funny stories hmm..."
she took a moment to think
"we had a guy from our group come in with his....."
she paused for a moment to think of the proper word
    "gentile area stuck"
    she coughed
"apparently he was using improper means for 'sexual gratification' and got carried away. Well the item he used, just didn't quite work out in his favor and what even worse, what he thought was lubrication, was actually waterproof sealant that you used to put on plumbing. We had to spend a few hours to cut the item off. What was worse is the vibration of the saw we had to use to cut it off, also didn't work in his favor, so we had to keep taking frequent breaks. "
    She shook her head
"I guess being a single guy and a plumber, those pipes, I guess are a bit .....intimidating over time"
    she shrugged then chuckled
"we sent him home with some solution to remove the remaining glue. Needless to say, he learned his lesson... or at least I hope he did"
She took another sip of her water. She looked him up and down curiously
"So what do you do now, since the apocalypse?"
    She paused a moment
"You mentioned you were into chemistry and were a professor pre apocalypse, do you still continue with it now, I mean aside from the teaching?"
knowing that teaching was uncommon now due to the apocalypse

Terry was always grateful of how alert Isa was, even if it did feel like it was sometimes over done. He knew about the knife in her boot, Terry having service in Iraq for around 3 tours, he has seen all he needs too when someone has the will to survive. When Naomi tried to pry for information he responded as he would to anyone.

"None of your business unless you're my superior, and even then. It's something only Isa and I need to know kid. The only thing I will say is we will be accompanying you to your cabin." He paused and eyed her for a moment. It was a more knowing stare than she would he comfortable with. "And don't you ever try that stab me in the back business again, She has more gun discipline than me. The second I heard you charge you'd already have been shot in the stomach."

Terry got up and walked out the door, He didn't care if Naomi followed, He only made his way to Isa. Terry was trying to give this girl Naomi a shot at being friendly with them. He saw she was young and lost just about everything. He had been there before.

"Isa!" He shouted when he got outside. He was only trying to get her attention. Before walking up to her and speaking in a whisper. "Look, I know you ain't a fan of her. But I can see in her eyes she has been through a lot. I'm just asking for a tiny bit of compassion. As for trust I don't care if you trust her. If she tries anything stupid I'll dispose of her myself."

He spoke in a more organized kind of way, as if he was giving Isa an order. Being a Sargeant did that to you.

"You know I always got your back girl. You ever hurt yourself, don't care how many biters there are. I'll die trying to get you out. No one left behind, you know that Isa." He wanted to make sure she knew he was on her side still.

"Just give the kid a chance, we've both lost a lot, this kid has too. You can see it in her eyes, her purpose, love, and happiness has all escaped. There is still just a small glimmer of light in there. Just be someone she can talk too. You don't have to respond just listen if you got nothing nice to say."

Terry had started to walk away, Though he has made peace with his past it still haunted him. Getting back inside he sat down at the table. He closed his eyes just to try to catch a quick nap. As he drifted out of consciousness it's when everything went awry.

The bellowing echo of helicopter blades filling his dreams before the sound of gunfire, she'll casings covering the helicopters floor. The scent of gunpowder filling the cabin before hearing in the headset "going down!" in his dream he woke up. The debris of the helicopter everywhere. Bloodied, bruised, and broken. He crawled away from the copter. Looking at all his friends, lifeless corpses. placing himself as close to a dune as possible he laid back, stretching his leg out he could feel his knee was at least dislocated and his breathing was uneasy. Likely a broken rib. Taking out his knife he placed it between his teeth. Biting down, he grabbed a hold of his left knee and snapped it back into place.

Terry woke up, it had only been 15 minutes. But he relieved his first encounter with death. He didn't scream, he didn't freak out. When he woke up he immediately reached for his pistol aiming it at whoever dare enter the room first. Once he processed which one it was he put the gun back in its holster and said nothing.

Isa paused for a moment in hearing Terry's voice but went right back to working on the jeep. She listened as he spoke with the cigarette between her lips she responded abruptly
"Whatever she has been through, is not my problem"
She took a puff of the cigarette and held it up, offering it to Terry. As she blew out the smoke it sounded a bit light a sigh of annoyance
"You know I'm not really one to have compassion, but I will try my best"
after Terry took a drag she took the cigarette back, took a drag as Terry spoke, then handed it back to him. This time she looked up at him and gave him a knowing smile. If it was anyone she cared about in the world right now, it was him and she too would do the same.
"I know you do, just as I will always have your back"
When he mentioned the kid again the annoyed look appeared back on her face. She knew that this was more of a command than a request. She sighed and responded
    "Fine"
She glared at Terry as he walked away. She wasn't looking forward in having a conversation with a yappy teenager. But she also knew Terry meant well. So for his sake she would attempt to give the girl a try.

After a few minutes she had finished fixing the tire and put it back on the jeep. She grabbed a rag and headed inside. She noticed Terry had nodded off and knowing that sleep was hard to come by she quieted her steps in hopes to not wake him. But he suddenly woke up aiming his pistol at her. This hadn't been the first nor the last time this happened, so it didn't phase her. She just knew not to move in that situation as moving could result in the trigger being pulled so she just remained still until he had focused. When he holstered his pistol, she walked up to him and slid a bottle of water over to him giving him a knowing look
"Which one was it this time?"
She took the seat opposite from him. Nightmares were something she too was familiar with, especially those who had dealt with trauma. She held out the pack of cigarettes to him offering him one, to help calm the nerves. She herself was never a smoker until she got into the military and experienced all she had. She decided to fill him in on her report.

"The jeep is all set and ready, the tire should hold up just fine. I was just about to look over and make an inventory of the supplies we gained."

Terry didn't say much as he grabbed the cigarette from the pack, Reaching into his pocket he pulled out his zippo engraved with his company and battalion number. Lighting it up he looked at Isa, he had the look in his eye as if he was looking at an enemy but as he continued everything got less cloudy at least once he heard the voice he snapped back to reality.

"Good, good." He responded to the jeep as he figured it was more important at the moment. "The helicopter. Being a POW Marked for execution still ain't got me right in the head. Narrowly escaped. Glad I was alive back then. But back then things were much simpler."

As he continued smoking his cigarette he figured they could pack up a bit. Mostly get munitions and guns loaded. He thought for a short moment. "This is gonna sound insane, Isa. But... we are gonna be moving at night. I'm gonna give that kid a gun, she is gonna need it if she gets separated from us. She is one of our only hopes for something off the grid."

Terry stood up and poked out the cigarette on the table it was just about done anyway maybe 2 or 3 drags left. He went to the room Naomi was staying in and pulled off about 8 pieces of the floorboard. Reaching down into the hole he grabbed out a duffle bag. It was loaded with ammo, a few assault rifles, and some handguns. Reaching in he pulled out a USP 45. checked the mags, and threw about 4 mags to Naomi.

"Listen kid. When we head out I'm giving you this gun." He lifted his free hand to show the pistol. "Now I'm sure your partner who was supposed to be riding with you in the truck advised against this. But we're gonna be heading out at night." Even if Naomi or Isa asked. He wasn't going to explain why they were going too. The truth was its easier to hide your tracks at night. And further more. He wanted to put Naomi into a position she had to choose her life or everyone's life.

"Get your shit together girl. It's gonna be a long night."Terry left the room and went back to Isa.

"I know you're probably thinking it's a bad idea, but the horns might be watching us during the day. I know I'm not the only one getting those eyes burning the back of your head feeling. There's someone out there, watching us." Even if she wasn't, Terrys sense if paranoia was mostly reliable, however not every situation is he correct.

Alan stared blankly, his face contorting a baffled expression with a twist of disgust.
"I've seen people become very attached to their work, but...not literally like that."
He blinked and shook his head.
"I suppose isolation can do strange things to the human mind."

    He sighs wistfully.
"I wish I could teach. The more I think about it, the more I feel that it would be such a calm, quiet, yet fulfilling life. But this is not an era for teachers and classrooms. It falls to us to take what knowledge of the past we still possess and put it into practical use here and now before the world wastes away."
He scratches the stubble on his chin, uncertain of how to answer Lea's question.
"As for what I do now, well...that is a complicated matter. I dabble in trading for supplies and ammunition, I've been known to manufacture a few handy gadgets here and there, and I've been looking into ways of using certain formulas to improve crop growth and yield."
He pulls out a vial filled with pitch-black liquid from his pocket.
"But above all else, I suppose you could call me...an arms dealer of sorts. But I won't just make any old weapons, oh no...for you see, my goal, my only purpose in this world, ever since this has all began, has been to bring cleansing fire into this dark, dreary world. Do you see what this is?"
He holds the vial closer to Lea.
"It's a formula I've been working on for quite some time. I'm close now...very close to perfecting it, and then I will begin mass-producing it."
As he stares deeply into the vial, his expression shows the slightest hint of a prideful smile at the sight of his creation.
"It is a substance very close in function to a deadly weapon used in the old world. Napalm, they called it. Some say it blazes like the fires of purgatory...heh, others say it just burns like hell. It is the pinnacle of my research, and once the final product is completed, I have plans to incorporate it into..."

He trails off, then laughs at how unhinged he probably sounded.
"Ah, but here I am rambling about things that, frankly, I really shouldn't be saying out loud."
He quickly puts the vial away.
"You probably don't want to hear about all of that. Who would? Such dreary talk, going on about fire and other such weapons of war. Some might even say it's dangerous research...hmm, I don't suppose the Hippocratic Oath covers trade secrets about weapons? Ah, never mind."
He leans against a nearby wall, letting out a weary sigh.
"There was a time when I could carry on conversations like a normal person. God help me, I miss those days. But even more so, I miss the man I used to be. Too bad it's all gone now...all lost in the fire, and the fire is all I have left."
Almost as though his cryptic musings were directed to nobody in particular, his eyes started falling into a dull, empty stare as he spoke.

Isa nodded in acknowledgment about the POW helicopter and not being right from that. Being a soldier came with a lot of trauma from all they are put through. She had her own memories, that would also cause her nightmares. Memories that has changed her and to this day she cant get over. When mentioning life was simpler then she nodded in agreement as she snuffed out her own cigarettes
    "That it was"
Back then it was just war with whomever the country was at war with, now its a war to just survive and not be turned into one of those zombies.
She leaned back in her chair when he mentioned moving at night she was in agreement with him up until he mentioned giving the girl a gun, her expression changed to one of disapproval. She knew it didnt matter if she approved or not, he would give the girl a gun either way.
"Just don't expect me to baby sit the brat, if she shoots herself, that's on her"
was all she said as he exited the room. She leaned in folded her arms on the table, then rested her head in her arms, she rested her eyes for a brief moment while awaiting Terrys return.

When Terry entered calling her kid she quickly snapped back
    "I'm not a kid"
She crossed her arms over her chest annoyed by him calling her kid. When he lifted the gun to show her the pistol, her eyes widened in shock. 'Is he really about to hand me a gun?' She narrowed her eyes at him wondering if there was a catch. She slowly took the gun and checked the aim and to see if the clip was loaded. When he mentioned the partner who she was supposed to be riding with being against it, she lowered the gun on her lap and shook her head. It was actually the opposite, her father wanted her to have a gun... in fact...she remembered she had her fathers gun right before she ran into these two. But before she could ask, he had already exited the room. She got up quickly and walked out of the room not far behind him.

Isa heard his footsteps approach and lifted her head to look up at him.
"So you have that eerie feeling as well?"
She leaned back in the chair to think for a moment
"So you want to moved at night to cover our tracks. Well the jeep is all fixed and ready to go. Are we trying to make it to our destination without stopping, or do you have a plan in mind?"
It was then Isa spotted the Naomi approaching behind Terry, Isa glared at the girl for a moment, making sure the girl didn't pose a threat now that she had a gun.

Before Terry could respond, Naomi interrupted the two of them. She laid the gun on the table and turned to face Terry, she crossed her arms
"I want the gun that I had before you knocked me out. Where is it?"
She had a serious look on her face, the gun she had had a sentimental value to it, it was her fathers.
"If you are going to give me a gun, you can at least give mine back"

Lea leaned in and squinted her eyes to get a better look at the material in the vile. She couldn't help but be intrigued by it. She tilted her head slightly as if thoroughly looking at it. She leaned back as he began looking deeply into the vile, she could see the pride on his face. She understood that feeling very well. Being at the age she is and becoming one of the top nurses was something to be prideful about. But him, he created something, but what exactly was it. She continued listening to him. She was surprised when he mentioned it was Napalm. She leaned forward as he continued speaking about the ingredients but was left with disappointment when he had cut himself off.

"I didn't think you were rambling"
she took a sip of her drink and smiled
"What is it that you were gonna incorporate it into?"
she paused a moment realizing that he mentioned he probably shouldn't have been saying it out loud.
"Or are you not allowed to talk about it?"
she tilted her head in curiosity.
"If its something that will help eliminate those things out there, then I think its beneficial to continue with working on it."
She frowned when he mentioned missing who he used to be, and she couldn't agree more, In fact the whole world has changed, and the people changed with it. She noticed the look on his face
"Well your more than welcome to carry on conversations with me, Ill listen. "
She gestured around the empty room and shrugged
"Its not like I have anyone else here, ever since my brother left, its been to quiet here"
She smiled, but her smile also had sadness behind it. The reality was, when she saw him approaching in the boat, she was hopeful it was her brother. She focused mostly on her work and keeping busy. When she had a break, she would sit at the dock enjoying the scene while also hoping to someday see her brother return. She was starting the realize there was no possibility of that happening, it was just hard for her to accept it. It had been far to long, others have returned but not her brother.
    She quickly shook her head
    "Are you hungry?"

Terry sat down across from Isa again. Before Naomi entered the room he wanted to make sure he was able to say one to her. "The generator is going to cut in 5 minutes, grab your sniper and sneak out the back. It's a total blind spot from anyone surveying the area." right around that time Naomi walked in demanding her gun.

"Kid, Listen and listen good. You're gonna get your gun. But right now you gotta hold onto that pistol." Right around after he said that all of the lights cut out. He quickly rushed and grabbed Naomi to shut her up covering her mouth. Giving Isa his attention again.

"I'm not saying we're being watched right now, But I ain't taking chances of rolling out at night with something like that. Get to the sniper perch Isa, and look out over the hill. I saw some Morse code that wasn't ours, I think it's other horns but we're in Cimarron territory."

While Naomi was struggling to escape Terry's grip he tightened it. "And Isa, if we are being watched throw a single bullet at the window, I'll make sure this one is quiet."

After Naomi stopped resisting he spoke quietly and softly to her. "I gave you that gun for a reason, I'm placing trust in you. I know you ain't gonna kill us, and we won't kill you I can promise. But right now we need to avoid making a scene. When I let you go, you're going to grab that pistol off the table and wait for Isa to give us the signal as to what is happening. we will make it to the jeep, and you will get your gun back. But if we are being watched then we are being hunted, and truthfully, we're as big a target as you were when you ran into us."

He let Naomi go when he believed she understood what the situation. He was already prepared to fight, He knew Isa was too. "Stay safe outside Isa, I'll watch the window to make sure no one gets behind you when you're up there, the kid will watch the front door. And Isa, if you do see someone, and their looking at you. Take the shot, likelihood is they're trying to kill you"

Isa gave him a nod to let him know she understood his commands, just as the girl had entered the room. Isa glared at the girl the entire time she spoke, upon hearing what the girl had to say, Isa realized this was between the two. She quickly got and walked past the girl, ignoring her, and headed to the other room. She pulled a case out from under her bed and opened it. She quickly assembled her sniper, adjusting the scope to night vision and equipping the silencer. .

Naomi was about to argue, but before she could get a word out the lights had gone off and before she could even react Terry had quickly grabbed her to silence her. She instantly resulted to struggling thinking he was going to harm her at first

Isa had just made her way back into the room and set her case down on the table, when the lights went out. She halted for a second to allowed her eyes to adjust to the darkness before all while listening to Terry speak. She made sure all the adjustments were correct while listening to his instructions. She looked up at Terry and gave him a nod while slipping on her fingerless gloves. She took a quick look through her scope, switching the night vision on to make sure it still worked.
"Make sure she doesn't try to pull any stunts"
her eyes flashed to Naomi then back to Terry before she swung her sniper rifle over her back and grabbed her case.

When Naomi realized what was going on she calmed down which in turn Terry relaxed his grip on her. She did as instructed and took the gun from the table once Terry let go of her. She had no idea what was going on, but these two seemed to be taking it rather serious, so she chose to do the best thing and take it seriously as well. Knowing she would get her fathers gun back gave her even more reason to cooperate. She did as she was instructed and headed towards the door, keeping her guard up with the gun she was given up and ready. Her movements making her way towards the door resembled someone of military status.

Isa was heading towards the back door Terry gave her the instruction to be safe, she stopped with her hand on the doorknob, and looked over giving him another nod.
"will do... and sir...you do the same"
She smirked before swinging the door opened, stepped out and pulled the door closed behind her quickly. She took a second to take in her surroundings, making sure the coast was clear before she would make her way to the sniper tower. Once she realized the coast was clear, she made a sprint for the tower, keeping herself low. Once she reached the tower she claimed it quickly. She kept herself low upon reaching the top. Typical protocol to make sure one cant be seen. Once she settled herself on the ground, she set her case next to her and began adjusting her sniper rifle until she could see far off in the distance. Isa's eye sight was already sharp as it was, but the night was a little bit of a disadvantage as she couldn't see as far as she could if it was day. Thankfully she had the night vision scope, which helped allow her to see the same distance as she could see during the day and then some.

She adjusted the vision on the scope until she could see the edge of the hills clearly. She waited quietly for a few moments, moving the vision of the gun over the hills looking out for any type of movement. It took a moment before she spotted movement, she watched it for a moment before realizing the movement was a person looking through a gun aimed towards their location, it looked they were scouting the location. Isa, placed her finger on the trigger and pressed the safety button. She waited a moment to make sure she had the shot lined up then pulled the trigger. A moment later the scout fell flat and disappeared from her vision, a clear shot. A few seconds later she noticed more movement at the edge of the hill, she didn't hesitate and moved her gun to aim towards the window and fired the warning shot. She swung her gun back around and watched through the scope, if anyone would get to close, she would take them down.
