@Sir-Maddy I'm still tempted to watch SAO. I have gone off anime for a bit again. I feel like after you have seen over 150 differents series, there isn't much to watch in terms of variety.

Then I would suggest watching it then. Everyone has their own opinions for certain anime, I personally enjoyed SAO, mostly the first arc over the rest, but nonetheless a good watch on my end.

i think maddy was referring to eureka seven ao (yes that existed) and i heard bad things about it which lead me to think its that anime not SAO. havent wached it because of those but who knows when ill be able to watch it.

No I meant Eureka Seven. Watch that instead of SAO, but don't watch Eureka Seven AO, which is the sequel.

But if you decide to watch SAO, I have a 4 step process to SAO:

    1. Watch SAO subbed up until episode 13
    2. Drop it at episode 13 - You've seen enough
    3. Watch Gun Gale Online
    4. After GGO you'd have successfully finished SAO, congrats

Ahhh, ok. It all makes sense now. I'm still on an anime hiatus at the moment. Too engrossed in Netflix dramas :p

I understand this thread is super old but if anyone could reply it would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve been drifting away from anime because I was getting pretty tired of the same bs I was getting from show to show. The more I watched the more it seemed that anime just shared the same plots and characters with each other. I was tired of the two dimensional characters that didn’t develope and the half hour monologues that were unrealistically melodramatic and the thousands upon thousands of filler episodes without plot.

I recently watched Re:Zero which kind of restored my faith in this genre a bit because nothing was wasted. Every episode had crucial plot development and the main character displayed so much humanity instead of the usual overpowerment or melancholy. I left every episode waiting and wishing for more with no idea what would come next.

I’d really like to feel that again with another anime but I have no idea where to start. If anyone has anything I’d love to hear it. Thanks

I'd love to see your MAL or AP list, but I guess to start off with I'd recommend Made in Abyss.

That's what this thread is here for, always feel welcome to revive it. This is a question we all keep coming back to.
Now I'd agree with Shadow, I'd need to see your MAL or AP before I decide on anything. Does it have to be dubbed? What sorts of shows have you liked before.

From the sounds of it you'd like unconventional anime, ones that don't follow the same high school routine or the typical battle shounen route. I've got a few that come to mind such as Kuuchuu Buranko but I can't recommend it just yet without further information.

I'd have to agree with this actually. Not expecting too much from a cutesy children adventure story works well for this show. Looking forward to S2 and I will be watching it when it airs this time.

I’m not sure what a MAL or AP list is... lol...

Your pretty spot on with your guesses and I’m open to watching anything really, I like seeing things both dubbed and subbed so I can compare the voice acting and really see how it impacts the show in its entirety. Also don’t know what a MAL or AP is... sorry

@Badassdad69 MAL and AP are acronyms for their respective external anime listing sites. My Anime List and Anime Planet, we use them to quickly show off our thoughts about shows and keep ourselves updated with what we've watched. You can see a few examples in our signatures.

Hmm since you're open for anything and you don't have an audio preference that makes it easier since we can recommend the quirkiest stuff and you'll still consider it. Would still help to have some clue as to what you've enjoyed a lot over the years.
The colourful Kuuchuu Buranko could be interesting as it is absolutely random stories about patients seeking treatment. It isn't really for just everybody and their isn't really a PV I could show you.
    https://myanimelist.net/anime/6774/Kuuchuu_Buranko
The Tatami Galaxy is another wacky show aimed more at seasoned veterans. Full of "what if" options, we get to see the daily life of a university student play out when he chooses different clubs to join and the people he meets.
    https://myanimelist.net/anime/7785/Yojouhan_Shinwa_Taikei?q=the tatami

I don't actually know if you'll even find these interesting but they are the first two series I think of for quirky non mainstream shows. Let us know if there is anything more specific you'd like to see instead. Sports, mech, romance whatever we'll try to match it.

Thanks for the reply. I’m not sure what I’m into per say in anime but I definitely do appreciate a distinct storyline as that ultimately what grounds me to a show. It’s been quite a bit since I really watched anything. I started anime with SAO when I was like in middle school, loved it but hated 1st ep of 2 so I quit. Then I got into some echi ( I was a freshman in high school) but what really appalled me was Highschool DxD. It was literally every thing a hormonal teen boy could want; fights, decent story, loads of humor, girls, humor, a surprisingly really relatable main, humor, and girls. From there I heard about Angel Beats from a freind and loved that (I was in high school), then I watched Clannad and was like “meh” for the first season then absolutely balled the whole second... I watched Guilty Crown thought it was Badass... I saw Evangelion and thought it was cool especially the last few episodes...watched Baccano and liked that one...Then Attack on Titan was Super Cool until it took too long and I read the manga and spoiled it then it sucked.... The new movies of Berserk that came out were A1 Steaksauce in my mind since it had a story and it stuck to it and didn’t waste my time, also had some really great OST and animation and not really any bs.... then since nothing else seemed dope I got into Naruto and Holy Crap it was crazy I’m not too sure how to rate it since it went from 0 to 100 so often: sometimes it was aight then it really sucked since 1 stupid fight lasted 9 damn episodes then other times it was like watching a completely different show: fights fought quickly and meaningfully and characters spoke out of necessity instead of prolonging the moment and the characters even grew fantastically at times so by the time I got the the end I was both very pleased but extremely tired with it, then I took a long break from anime after multiple tries with various shows (can’t remember the names) until decided to give the genre another go and found myself very much happy with re:zero but now I don’t know where to go... I’ve dabbled into movies as well.. sStudio Ghibli is always pretty dope... the new Gundam Thunderbolts were pretty good as they lacked that bs element in most gundams.. so yeah that’s me. I guess I just want something that has artistic value in terms of screenplay and plot etc.. I want symbols and metaphors and foreshadowing.. things that really make you go wow at the end of a show. Don’t get me wrong anime is anime and it’ll always have its quirky moments and I love it for that but I also think it shouldnt just revolve around those moments which why I really liked Re:Zero: there was so much to unpack after each episode in terms of plot advancement, character development, screenplay, symbols, metaphors, etc. I hope I don’t sound too nerdy here, I know I must sound really snobby with what I’m looking for but trust when I say it doesn’t have to super mature or deep, anime is anime and that’s why I love watching it. If I didn’t like the quirky characters and the occasional harem I would be looking for award winning films instead of anime.

But yeah that’s me so far. I really hope I don’t sound like a douche with my criteria cus I’m literally willing to watch just about anything that is blatantly not trash, I would just really like it if it was super dope. Again any reply is very appreciated. Thanks

@Badassdad69 Haha oh wow, disregard my earlier recommendations as they are definitely not what you're looking for. You want the hype moments and the friendship, the feeling of adrenaline when you see the villain getting his arse handed to him.
Sounds more like I can go the other way. General shows that almost everyone can get into because they are fun and hype you up.
The two obvious standouts that match what you said above would be Haikyuu and Boku no Hero Academia. Full of character development, friendship and awesome clashes. Typically everyone enjoys these types of shows.
No Game No Life would also fit into your strike zone since slightly perverted yet can be hype at times.
If you want another emotional show you can't go wrong with Anohana either. Especially since the ed theme is absolutely amazing and resonated with everyone that has watched the show.

Now as an added bonus I'll list is Rainbow. It is much darker than it sounds by the name.

Okay I'm bored so who wants to try and find me a good anime to watch? It can be anything as long as you think I'll like it. Whether it is just interesting or hilarious do your worst. As I said in the "what are you currently watching thread" I don't have as much to watch this season and will be in need of a few other shows to try.
The best recommendations may be entitled to my vote for our site awards. The worst recommender may be lucky enough to receive my vote for the prestigious Sir Maddy's shit taste award.

I looked through your list, and just compared side by side of something you've yet to watch.
    Have you seen Active Raid?

@Dylanar You mean this one? A newer show that I completely overlooked when it was airing that MAL pretty much agrees is worthy of a fine rating while being generous? Hmm that is a pretty unexpected recommendation, I usually check what my friends think of shows and you're the only one that rated it higher than a 5. I do like that you've gone for something different here, not something I'd choose myself to watch. I may actually consider it for this reason.
    https://myanimelist.net/anime/31790/Active_Raid__Kidou_Kyoushuushitsu_Dai_Hachi_Gakari?q=active raid

Keep them coming, the more interesting the recommendation the better.

Ya, I meant that one, I've been less discriminatory in terms of what I watch in the most recent years. I've even gotten to a point where I just stopped rating shows altogether.
Aside from that, I'll look into more things to recommend.
Edit: I'm gonna go on a limb here and suggest BEATLESS.
