I'm posting this because I am genuinely curious. I'd also like to know how you got started watching anime.

hmmmm i really cant remember what the first one but i can say that my anime exposure started when these anime were shown in our local tv stations.

    Alps no Shoujo Heidi
    Ie Naki Ko Remi
    Tom Sawyer no Bouken
    Shoukoushi Cedie
    Anime Himitsu no Hanazono

my parents pretty much considered them as cartoons at that time and just let me and my siblings watch them.. contemporary anime started for me when Lupin III, Hunter X Hunter, Ghost Fighter and Flame of Recca were shown in the late 1996. from there, i think thats when i really started getting into anime.

I started with the Studio Ghibli movies back in the day. It wasn't until I found that my local channels were airing Pokemon that I started watching that. But I think I officially became a fan when Yu-Gi-Oh was on and immediately following that, I found myself watching Gundam Wing and Knights of the Zodiac.

Huh. Didn't this topic exist once upon a time?
Well it's time for a nostalgia trip anyway!

Toonami used to put some anime on t.v in English dub (I'm not so old to remember Toonami right?). If we include that then probably Dragonball Z. Or Sailor Moon. Wait the later came on t.v earlier right?
    Don't judge me :)

By the time I figured what "anime" was then the first one I went out to watch for myself would be Robotech. An odd choice probably but man what a cool show that turned out to be. It will always remain a nice memory for me.

The original Voltron. There was another one, but because of my advanced C.R.S., I don't recall it.

@Doomguy You remember the first Toonami too? The original Jack? Damn. You and I must be around the same age. You're right that Toonami aired both Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z. The latter being later on Toonami during the "Adult Swim" that all of us ignored and watched anyway. I think Sailor Moon used to air at like 8pm? DBZ would air at around 9 or 10 at the start of Adult Swim. Cuz you know, blood and violence. CTN was never good at trying to censor anything for the kids lol. As if we wanted anything to be censored anyway.

I first watched anime unintentionally when I caught howl's moving castle playing on TV. Years later I watched Ponyo in cinema with my family. The first anime I actively watched from my laptop at home was rosario to vampire and that's what started my casual obsession.

I grew up watching tv series anime. Yu-gi-oh, Pokemon, DBZ, but I actually started "watching anime" as in online with deathnote.

As shared by many here already... most of us watched "cartoons" on TV i.e. the original Voltrons (The Lion and Element versions), TNMT, Ghostbusters, Dungeons & Dragons, Transformers (all animated versions); just to name a few which I have watched since young...

But officially when it came to actual Anime... first series that I had watched initially were:
    Peace Maker Kurogane

    Hellsing
    [IMG]

    The Twelve Kingdoms
    [IMG]

And then of course the ultimate series NARUTO
    [IMG]

Basically Nartuo blew anime up for me... and I haven't looked back since...

Well, Realistically it'd be Pokemon. But, If you don't count childhood shows it'd be Lucky Star.

Strictly speaking, maybe Pokemon, as a kid, but my dad forbade it.
But I only started watching anime after getting curious about Queen's Blade and checking it out. The first full series I watched was Dakara Boku H, then the first full English dubbed series was Rosario+Vampire.

Yeah, kinda bad for a start in anime. That was all when I was 18, 19 years of age.

I am currently watching that one. I'm only at the fourth episode, but it feels like the plot is going nowhere. I do love the intro and "Lucky Channel" at the end of each episode, though.

It's literally the Seinfeld of anime.

Yup. Lucky Star was good and funny but Nichijou was more hilarious than Lucky Star. Just.. none of the characters stood out like Konata did.

Well, for me Lucky Star was just kinda relaxing. I used to watch an episode or two before bed.

For me, DBZ, Pokemon, Yu Yu Hashuko, and Trigun were my favorite anime as a child (Vash the Stampede is still a favorite character of mine), but the first anime I watched for the sake of watching, not just because it was on, was Clannad when it came out......and the rest is history.

That question would have to be hard for mii.
I started watching kids anime like Pokemon and Sailor Moon at an age I don't remember ever watching them.

I then remember watching Naruto not knowing it was anime.

Then I saw Vampire Knight on Television, and I said "I like this style" researched what 'anime' was then got really hooked in other series.
