A fairly recent article by "The Week" covered a feat made by Japanese scientists. This technology is still very new, and fairly lackluster as it is now. However does this make us one step closer to having holodecks or even hologram fitted rooms so that we can interact with our wifu's many interesting things once thought totally impossible, or at least out of our lifetime?

I think that it is a very big step for technology as a whole. I am also exited for what the future may hold for this tech.

It's a step closer to Tony Stark's holo-computer system. Have I ever mentioned how much I'd love to have that computer of his? lol
Despite it's lackluster, it shows quite a bit of promise even at it's early stage. The question is, which piece of technology will get the first taste of it? Computers? Phones? Television (maybe not so much as the earlier two)? Or a smaller part of technology, such as keyboards? We all have seen those keyboards using lasers to display the keys, so will this get extended and be the first to bring interactive holograms to consumers?
How about the less-tech use, mannequins? Display clothing articles and interact with the model.

You know this technology, once perfected, will eventually replace conventional computers. It will only be a matter of time.

I wonder if the next step for something like this is moving to a "hard light" system instead of ultrasonic system as hard light would be alot safer and could make a physical object rather than a projected one.
Also I would imagine the real time rendering for something like this would redefine graphics cards to the limit for a standard house hold computer if put in a consumer based product.

I will be keen to see were this leads us in the future.

It sounds pretty neat. I would have to agree with Delta about it being better to be hard light. That would mean that it could actually have a practical use. These things would have to be restricted to the range of the projection system, though.

So are you saying that hard-light actually exists or that their is a possible way for it to exist?

I forgot to mention that hard-light would just be an upgrade of touchable holograms. As far as I know, it is non-existent. I rather doubt that would be available in my lifetime, or even a few lifetimes from now.

I think if the image projector and sensation projector only had one source, then it would be somewhat inaccurate, since touching from the wrong side would cut off the projections. But if it had two or more, placed far enough to get an accurate all-around feel, it would also be rather bulky, or, at least difficult to transport.
