I am going to leave out the ridiculously OP characters that everyone falls in love with and gets their panties wet for. Simply because they are just that. OP. That's not strength. There is more to strength than just being capable of punching the crap out of everything, or being so ungodly powerful that you can challenge the gods. *cough* Goku *cough*

To be truly strong, one must have strength of mind and heart as well. OP characters don't have much of this kind of strength because there is no need for it. They just simply 'are.'

    Without further adieu,

1: Araragi Koyomi (Monogatari series), He might not necessarily win, but at least he has the balls, courage, and inner strength to say that he tried. The man has guts. He gets beaten down and gets right back up again and asks for more. And it's always because he wants to help, or protect someone. Never for him personally.

2: Ayanami Rei (Neon Genesis Evangelion), Although she might seem like the cold, emotionless bitch at first, she really isn't. She just isn't capable of understanding how to show emotions. Nor does she really understand them. Regardless, the woman is strong. She takes daily ridicule, excessive injuries, and phycotraumatic experiences, and gets right back into the fight.

3: Ranma (Ranma 1/2), Lets admit it. The guy has a horrid life. Stuck wit a crazy father who is only bent on furthering his Martial Arts and a cursed body, he's probably one of the strongest there are. The guy takes regular harassment from his family, his fiance(s), the kids at school, his rival(s), all because his father couldn't just stay home and make a living like most people. Ranma is forced to deal with the bad guys, fiances that want him to marry them, a jealous rival, oh and lets not forget the lecherous Happosai. While not just having to deal with these things, Ranma is by far the strongest individual in the series... until he pisses of Akane.

4: Allen Walker (D. Gray Man), Face it, none of us want to ever be in Allen's shoes. Sure, he's got an arm that can rip Akuma in half, but his life sure sucks. On top of having to fight a war with beings of unimaginable power, Allen is forced to deal with the repercussions of his Master's actions and deal with the interpersonal relationships between some... strange friends(?). Regardless, Allen has to train constantly, get stronger, Fight Akuma, Deal with a crazy swordsman who'd love to kill Allen because he is cursed, put up with the torturous treatments of Kumoi, and still try to save the word in the end. Nuff said.

5: Simon (Tenma Toppa Gurren Lagan), Probably the most OP, non OP character that I'll ever root for. Simon starts out whimpy, and whiny, and annoying at the beginning. And even after the death of Kamina, he just slips into a depression that even Tomoko Kuroki would be proud of. But that all changes when he gets older, and bolder, and well... mature. Because the anime was under severe time restraints, Gurren Lagan was rushed. I feel that it was good but could have been better. While Simon essentially becomes so powerful he can utilize the power of the universe, In the end, he gives it up. All of it. Becomes normal, and passes his legacy onto the next generation. Like a true hero.

    Hmmm...
Dante (Devil May Cry Anime) he just don't seem to be able to die
Rika Furude (Higurashi No Naku Koroni Kai) she can't seem to be able to die
Alucard (Hellsing Ultimate) no need to explain
Light Yagami (Death Note) although the ending ended how it did, he still managed to walk away untill the very end.
Matoi (Kill La Kill) she just couldn't stay down either.
