The official website for the Violet Evergarden anime began streaming a promotional video on Wednesday for an "Extra Episode" anime that will ship on the series' fourth Blu-ray Disc and DVD release. The video features the song "Letter" performed by TRUE.

The story of the new episode will center on a letter request from an opera house songstress and take place over several months between the events of the anime's episodes 4 and 5. The episode will screen at the "Violet Evergarden Film & Concert" event, which will be held at NHK Hall in Tokyo on July 1. Members of the anime's cast and staff will also attend the event.

The anime series' fourth and final home video release will include episodes 11, 12, and 13 and ship in Japan on July 4. The Blu-ray Disc release will cost 9,800 yen (about US$89), and the DVD will cost 8,800 yen (about US$80).

The official Twitter account for the anime confirmed in April that a "completely new" work of animation had been green-lit. The wraparound jacket band for the Violet Evergarden Gaiden (side story) novel revealedon March 23 that the franchise had a "new project in progress."

The series premiered on television in Japan on January 10, and launched on Netflix on January 11 in some territories, including Japan, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the Philippines. The anime launchedon Netflix in the United States on April 5.

Kyoto Animation announced the anime project based on author Kana Akatsuki and illustrator Akiko Takase's Violet Evergarden novel in May 2016, and has streamed two animated commercials from director and storyboard artist Taichi Ishidate. Takase served as character designer and animation director for the videos. Ishidate and Takase returned for the anime itself, and Reiko Yoshida (Yowamushi Pedal, Bakuman.) was in charge of series composition. Yota Tsuruoka was the sound director, and Evan Call composed the music.
