Trigun: The Ending (Spoilers)

Vash seemed to make his stance pretty clear in the end about how he felt about the planet, its people, Rem's "words of wisdom" and how he felt about his brothers actions. How do you think the story would continue since it left the ending pretty open? The optimistic conclusion would be that Vash helped reform Knives and changed his views on humans. The pessimistic opinion would be that Knives was unwilling to change his ways. So in your mind how would you conclude the events between Vash and Knives after the show ends?
