Notice The @ Function and why you should use it

    The @ function is a fundamental part of this website and I would encourage everyone to use it.

    No matter where you post (not including chat), if you want to get somebody's attention this is where the @ function really plays it's part. Simply quoting someone will not guarantee a response from them. They may not be watching the thread anymore or are not subscribed to the thread to be updated on replies to it via email.

    Simply type @username before you post your message anywhere on the site and the person you want to reply will get a message saying that you mentioned him and point him to the area to respond.

    So for instance if you want me to respond just type @dtradmin anywhere on the site and post your message and I will see what you have posted via my profile page.

    Neat huh? Start using the @ function and you will find yourself getting more responses from the people you are trying to talk to.

    @zak-b god is not a member therefore I declare that god is not everywhere. It also seems that the @ function doesn't work on display names so if, like zak, has a different display name you will probably have to load the users profile to get the correct @ command which is displayed next to their avatar

    @dtradmin: I noticed this recently and here is what I will point out to help improve the feature but first, did it work Admin? It's my first time trying so I hope it worked.

    So yeah. First off it only tells you someone @'d you if you notice it before you exit or go to a different page of the site. In other words say I'm viewing my PMs right, well nothing atm but then I exit and then I got @'d before I went to the next page but if I don't notice it and go to a different page of the site it won't keep telling me I got @'d. It just disappeared. Maybe I hovered over the icon with the number and then exited and it did that or maybe I didn't and it did that, don't remember.

    The next thing I noticed is if I quote someone who @'d me then it will tell me I got @'d but when I check it was just my own post with the quote in it that had the @me which is annoying.

    Lastly it would be better and easier if we had some sorta way to shorten the name of who we are @ing and it still work. Though this would be somewhat difficult to incorporate if it's even possible.

    Not sure if I'll use this feature too much but it is nice.

    @natsuru-san I have not noticed the same thing with notifications from mentions disappearing so I cannot fix something that I cannot see broken. But they are always stored in your user wall under activity>mentions it also sends you a notification via email. It's possible that you were browsing your wall at the time maybe which would remove the notifications as they are stored on your activity wall. As for @ yourself, honestly I am not sure why you would want to do that. I don't think shortening will work, I can see it causing a lot of problems as the names are generated by buddpress core and it will probably cause a lot of conflicts. Adding functionality to it via plugin could work but messing with how buddypress deals with members accounts is not really a road I want to walk down.

    So yeah, thats a whole lot of denied :/

    It's a nice function but as you pointed out, it has it's flaws

    Yeah perhaps I was mistaken then.
    No I wouldn't want to @myself however when I quoted someone who did @me then it sent me that notification saying someone @'d me when in fact it was just my post that I had quoted someone on who @'d me and the only way to stop it from notifying me is if I delete the person's @me in the quote though I hope by pointing this flaw out that it can be fixed so we won't have to delete the @us in the quote.
