I'm really surprised (though not complaining that SAO one of my all time fav anime got top spot); that 'Your Name' didn't even get a notable mention or on the list...

Umm @SkeLo @Teknoman X there is a very simple explanation to that. Kimi no Na wa wasn't released in 2017. It was actually a 2016 release. You may be confused because of the American release or perhaps the release of the dub, maybe even the release of the DVD. But it was most definitely released in 2016 in Japan, the place that actually matters when releasing these movies.
Thought I'd just clear that up.

As for this list, it was obvious SAO would rank high as the Japanese still love that trash heap. Especially those younger men. Bloody teenagers. No Game no Life ranking high doesn't surprise me, but I actually saw that one in cinemas. It was a bit of fun.
Fireworks was also different but definitely not the best movie released.

Personally I'm still looking forward to watching the Godzilla movie, and considering how old that franchise is and the fact that this is the first anime godzilla I thought it'd do better than that.
