Pretty Sammy Sequel Project Starts Crowdfunding for Promo Video

Anime production company AIC launched a Campfire crowdfunding campaign for a five-minute promotional video for a sequel to Magical Girl Pretty Sammy (Mahō Shōjo Pretty Sammy) on Thursday. The project is seeking 10,000,000 yen (about US$89,000) by December 7 to fund a video to pitch to sponsors with the aim of green-lighting an anime series. Stretch goals will extend the length of the video if met.



Backer rewards include a new mini novel written by Masaki Nagano (either as a PDF of a booklet), special t-shirt, clear file, raw materials book, credit in the promotional video, autographed materials such as scripts or illustrations, and a chosen character or place appearing in the video.

The title listed for the sequel is "Sasami 14." The proposed story takes place when Sasami is 14 and a second-year student in middle school. She and her friend Misao are supposed to be magical girls, but they suddenly lose the ability to transform. When a new monster and a mysterious new magical girl arrive, she has to figure out what to do.

Campfire revealed AIC's plans for a Pretty Sammy sequel project in February. The campaign is AIC's third anime crowdfunding campaign on Campfire. Earlier this year, AIC successfully funded five-minute videos for Megazone 23 XI and Megazone 23 SIN, both in anticipation of green-lighting anime series. The Megazone 23 SIN ended on Thursday, meeting its goal on the last day.

The Pretty Sammy original video anime (OVA) is a spinoff of Tenchi Muyo! that recasts Sasami as a magical girl. The OVA spawned a 1996-1997 television series with a reimagined story. Sasami also returned as a magical girl in the two-season Sasami: Magical Girls Club spinoff television series in 2006.

Pioneer (later Geneon Entertainment) released both the OVA and the television series in North America. While the OVA retained the title Magical Girl Pretty Sammy, Pioneer released the television series under the title Magical Project S. FUNimation Entertainment released Sasami: Magical Girls Club in North America.
