So many Pixar films deal with grief – whether it’s Up (don’t set us off), The Good Dinosaur (did they really go there in the opening act?), or Coco (oh god, here come the full-blown sobs). And with the studio’s latest movie, Onward, they’re in parental death territory again – but this time with a more comedic twist. Set in a contemporary version of a typical fantasy world – with mushroom houses, domesticated dragons, and trash-munching unicorns – the film follows elf brothers Ian and Barney Lightfoot as they plan to resurrect their dead father for a day. Except, midway through the spell things go awry and… well, see for yourself in the new trailer.

Yep, in a fun twist the spell cuts off halfway along, leaving the brothers with their dad’s sentient, disembodied legs. Cue a quest to try and bring his top half back too. As with the best Pixar works, this one seems to be particularly inventive with its fictional world, and boasts a top voice cast in Tom Holland, Chris Pratt, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Octavia Spencer. The film is written and directed by Dan Scanlon, who directed Monsters University, and worked on the creative team for Inside Out, Coco, Incredibles 2, and Toy Story 4.

Onward comes to UK cinemas on 6 March 2020.
