The anime is based on Shōtarō Tokunō's workplace manga of the same name. In the manga, the main character Aoba Suzukaze graduates from high school and joins a game company. The person who made the game that Aoba loved as a grade-schooler just happens to be Aoba's senior at the company. The story follows girls who work and aspire at the Eaglejump company.

The first television anime premiered in July, and Crunchyroll streamed the anime as it aired in Japan. The first season had 12 episodes. Those who purchase all six of the Blu-ray Disc or DVD volumes of the anime can submit proof-of-purchase stubs to receive a new OVA, which serves as "episode 13" of the series.

Tokunō launched the manga in Houbunsha's Manga Time Kirara Charat magazine in 2013, and Houbunsha published the fourth volume on July 27. Houbunsha published the manga's fifth volume with the title New Game! The Spinoff! on the same day.

The manga and anime also inspired a PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita video game by 5pb. Games that shipped in Japan on January 26. The game featured the same cast from the first season of the anime.
