In a statement to IGN, Nintendo confirmed rumors that retailers would receive their final shipments of the NES-styled emulator in April. Adding that "NES Classic Edition wasn’t intended to be an ongoing, long-term product..." And that "...due to high demand, we did add extra shipments to our original plans."

The statement confirms that the NES Classic will be discontinued and implies, despite reports of limited stock, with some major retailers only receiving 2-3 units at a time, that the production and sale of the NES Classic has exceeded Nintendo's original plan for the system.

Discontinuation of the NES Classic, as well as the Famicom Classic, the Japanese equivalent of the NES Classic, comes amid rumors of a "SNES Classic" emulator in the works by Nintendo.

Nintendo sure as hell doesn't know how to milk a product. The NES Classic is the perfect example of why they should produce more units and continue selling them since the demand is still there, especially since it uses an HDMI port so you can use any TV or monitor to play the system on.

Nintendo is a joke of a business. It's surprising how they're even still in business with all the stupid decisions they make.

I think it was Jim Sterling that said "If Nintendo doesn’t hate money, it certainly seems to have a blind spot for the stuff."

In an industry riddled with cynical attempts to wrest as much profit from customers' wallets as possible, Nintendo seems to be on the extreme opposite of the spectrum. With so many people lining up to give Nintendo their money, Nintendo's seeming unwillingness to allow them to do so is utterly baffling.
