The Saturday concert of "Love Live! Sunshine!! Aqours 3rd Love Live! Tour ~Wonderful Stories~" at Fukuoka unveiled a teaser trailer for the Love Live! Sunshine!! The School Idol Movie Over the Rainbow film. The trailer teases the Italian setting, logo, and the first visual (featuring Chika) for the film.

The franchises's website lists the theaters that plan to show the film. While supplies last, the theaters will begin selling the first batch of advance Movi-Ticke Cards with a bonus clear file folder (both with the same visual) on July 29.

Love Live! Sunshine!! The School Idol Movie Over the Rainbow will open on January 4, 2019. It will be an all-new work (as opposed to a compilation or recap film).

The Love Live! Sunshine!! project was first announced in February 2015. The project's three key phrases are "Reader Participation," "Inspired by μ's," and "Seaside Town Setting." The group's name Aqours was chosen by fans by popular vote.

The first Love Live! Sunshine!! anime premiered in July 2016. Funimation, Crunchyroll, and Daisuki streamed the series outside of Japan. The second season of Love Live! Sunshine!! ran from October to December last year. Crunchyroll streamed the series as it aired in Japan, and Funimation began streaming an English dub for the series on October 23.
