The film premiered in Japan in January 2016, and was a spinoff of the Pretty Rhythm franchise that centered on the boys unit "Over the Rainbow." Yoshihiro Otobe (Pretty Rhythm Rainbow Live) served as the CG director, and Mai Matsuura(Pretty Rhythm All Star Selection) was credited with the original character plan and design. The film initially launched in 14 theaters, but eventually opened in more than 130 theaters after its popularity spread, selling about 460,000 tickets for about 800 million yen (about US$7.8 million). The film also received 4DX screenings alongside conventional screenings in June 2016.

A new sequel film titled King of Prism: PRIDE the HERO opened in Japan on June 10 with the same cast, with the addition of Tomokazu Sugita.
