Ghibli's Only Yesterday Earns US$13,000 in 1st Weekend at NYC Theater

Isao Takahata film slated for wider US release on February 26
Box Office Mojo reported that GKID's theatrical release ofStudio Ghibli and Isao Takahata's Only Yesterday (Omohide Poro Poro) film earned US$13,329 at one theater over the weekend of January 1-3. The film opened at the IFC Center in New York on January 1, with an expanded nationwide release set for February 26.

The film originally premiered in Japan in 1991. GKids' theatrical release corresponded with the film's 25th anniversary. It has not previously been released in North America.

Daisy Ridley (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) stars in the film's English dub cast as Taeko. The cast also includes Dev Patel(Slumdog Millionaire), Ashley Eckstein (Star Wars: The Clone Wars), and Alison Fernandez (Law & Order: SVU).

It's 1982, and Taeko (Daisy Ridley) is 27 years old, unmarried, and has lived her whole life in Tokyo. She decides to visit her family in the countryside, and as the train travels through the night, memories flood back of her younger years: the first immature stirrings of romance, the onset of puberty, and the frustrations of math and boys. At the station she is met by young farmer Toshio (Dev Patel), and the encounters with him begin to reconnect her to forgotten longings. In lyrical switches between the present and the past, Taeko contemplates the arc of her life, and wonders if she has been true to the dreams of her childhood self.
In addition to the theatrical rights, GKids has also licensed the non-theatrical, home video, and television rights for the film.
