The upcoming film Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (Biohazard VI: The Final) will open first in Japan on December 23, before any other country in the world. It will then open in the United States on January 27, 2017.

Live-action Resident Evil film franchise producer and director Paul W.S. Anderson announced in 2014 that he was penning the first draft of the film's script, and that it should be the last film in the series.

The first zombie apocalypse film loosely based on CAPCOM's survival horror game series premiered in 2002 with actress Milla Jovovich as protagonist Alice. Jovovich is returning to star in the new film. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter also features the Hollywood debut of Japanese entertainer Rola as Cobalt, a character crucial to the series' story finale. The cast includes Ali Larter as returning character Claire Redfield, William Levy, and Ruby Rose.

The game series is also inspiring a CG film that will open worldwide in 2017.
