Square Enix announced during the "Dragon Quest Natsu Matsuri" event on Sunday that it will release the first three games in the long-running Dragon Quest role-playing game series as digital downloads on the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo 3DS. Square Enix will begin offering Dragon Quest I and Dragon Quest II on Thursday for 600 yen (about US$5.50) and 850 yen (about US$7.50), respectively. The company will begin offering Dragon Quest III sometime in late August for 1,500 yen (about US$13.50).

Chunsoft developed the first three Dragon Quest games, and Enix published them. Enix released the games on the Famicom in 1986, 1987, and 1988, respectively. Since then, Enix/Square Enix have ported the games to multiple platforms, including the Super Famicom, the Game Boy Color, Wii, and smartphones. The games are the first three installments in the long-running series. Dragon Quest XI, the latest installment in the franchise, shipped in Japan on July 29 for the PS4 and 3DS, with a Nintendo Switch version planned for a later release.
