Curiosity Rover Makes Big Water Discovery in Mars Dirt

    Future Mars explorers may be able to get all the water they need out of the red dirt beneath their boots, a new study suggests.

    NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has found that surface soil on the Red Planet contains about 2 percent water by weight. That means astronaut pioneers could extract roughly 2 pints (1 liter) of water out of every cubic foot (0.03 cubic meters) of Martian dirt they dig up, said study lead author Laurie Leshin, of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y.

    It has always been known there is water on Mars and also Luna (Earth's moon). Moreover on Mars because there are ice caps. But the question has been is it enough to be sustainable. This might be enough water to sustain a small laboratory but not enough for any kind of colonization.

    But the problematic issue of getting to Mars continues to increase...  for example the increased radiation travelers would be exposed to on the trip there. What will be a possible re-sparking of a space race however will be China's CNSA intentions to launch a rover to Luna in 2017 and land people on Luna by 2024... which is a rather conservative and realistic goal for their space program. The UK also has plans to get people to Mars by 2021... sadly this may be overly optimistic. NASA has similar plans for for a Mars landing within fifteen years, but sadly this too may be too optimistic.
    I read somewhere that someone proposed some ambitious plans to terraform Mars within ten years of their project....​

    It's been speculated. Now they know exactly how much is in the soil.
